Science and research:42 wetland sites were monitored as part of the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Wetland Assessment to better determine the health of wetlands protecting our coastal communities; 5 living shoreline sites were planted, studied and maintained and a new hybrid site was constructed with partners at Money Island, NJ to study alternatives to bulk heads and help stem the erosion of the marshes along our coast; 90 freshwater mussels were tagged, adding to the 1,100 already tagged for monitoring since 2011 to better understand the water filtering services they provide in local creeks and streams; 50 volunteer fresh water mussel surveys have been completed to identify streams where mussels can still be found; and 300 attended the 2015 Science Summit taking in over 100 sessions on the latest scientific findings from practitioners across the estuary.Education and outreach:Earth Day in Wilmington, DE was planned and hosted to educate attendees about living an eco-friendly lifestyle and Coast Day at Penn's Landing was hosted to give attendees a first-hand experience on the water; 1,300 students participated in the Green Cities Clean Waters art contest held with Philadelphia Water with winning art being used as storm drain labels to educate the public; 27 teachers attended accredited summer workshops to enrich their science curriculum; 29,000 people participated in 1,000 Schuylkill Scrub river clean-up events removing 1.2 million lbs. of trash between March and late May; and 411 volunteers contributed 1,342 hours on planning and projects for the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, Inc. in 2015.A large planning effort began in 2015 for a 2.5 year process with partners and the public to revise the Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan.
