Critical care services are supplied directly to patients at emergency scenes in support of local EMS and public safety organizations, within hospital emergency departments and critical care units, and in support of physicians caring for critically ill or injured patients requiring emergent resuscitation, stabilization, and transportation for specialty services at major medical centers throughout Maine and the Northeast. LOM services are provided regardless of insurance status or ability to pay for care. LifeFlight helicopters, airplanes, and specialty ground ambulances, equipped as fully functioning mobile intensive care units provided services to 1635 patients in FY2015 ranging from premature infants to the most complex cardio-thoracic care. Patients were from 32 states in the US, 3 Canadian Provinces, and 2 foreign countries. Patients were transported to 26 receiving hospitals in Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. LifeFlight is financially supported by care to patients with funding from the LifeFlight Foundation to support aviation infrastructure, specialized medical equipment, aircraft, and outreach education. LOM provides care to critically ill and injured patients without regard to the ability to pay for care or insurance status. In FY2015, LOM incurred costs to care for patients unable to pay, of which $163,033 was for Charity Care and $898,582 in bad debt. Contractual allowances for charity care totaled $320,764 and allowances with third party payors, including reductions in revenue for Medicare and MaineCare beneficiaries, reduced revenue by $5,854,936 which included $569,000 written off in reductions from revenue for bad debt incurred in previous periods. In addition to providing care to critically ill and injured patients during FY15, LOM supported a private-public aviation infrastructure with the State of Maine and the Federal Aviation Administration including: maintenance support for 13 automated weather observation systems located at various rural airports and hospitals, as well as the development of 4 additional weather stations at hospitals and on remote islands which are used by general aviation operations and the National Weather Service. Further, LOM also provided planning, development, and design support for the construction of helipads at one hospital, and the maintenance of 39 helicopter instrument flight approach and departure procedures at hospitals, communities, islands, and rural airports.LifeFlight also runs a remote access project with over 120 remote access points in conjunction with the Maine Department of Conservation, the Maine Emergency Management Agency, Maine Fire Chiefs Association, Homeland Security, public safety agencies, numerous private landowners, woodland and forest product companies as well as outdoor recreation organizations. During FY15, LifeFlight implemented an on-line database of over 600 approved landing sites with access granted to all of the 911 Public Safety Regional Communication Centers for coordination of emergency response. 141991 Supporting the chain of survival, with assistance from the LifeFlight Foundation, LOM provides physicians and clinical staff continuing medical education. In FY2015, LFF provided management and clinical teaching support for the human patient simulator project in partnership with the Maine Department of Public Safety Emergency Medical Services Bureau. The simulation program is used by hospitals and EMS agencies throughout Maine for continuing medical education to improve the care of critically ill and injured patients with a special focus on children. In 2015, the Foundation helped to support LifeFlight in the provision of 27 HPS programs for 196 physicians, nurse practitioners/PAs, emergency department and ICU RNs, respiratory therapists, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians.
