These funds are used to further Audubon's Mission. Fin 48 Part X, LIne 2 Audubon follows guidance that clarifies the accounting for uncertainty in tax positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return, including issues relating to financial statement recognition and measurement. This guidance provides that the tax effects from an uncertain tax position can only be recognized in the financial statements if the position is "more-likely-than-not" to be sustained if the position were to be challenged by a taxing authority. The assessment of the tax position is based solely on the technical merits of the position, without regard to the likelihood that the tax position may be challenged. Audubon is exempt from income tax under IRC section 501(c)(3), though it is subject to tax on income unrelated to its exempt purpose, unless that income is otherwise excluded by the Code. Audubon has processess presently in place to ensure the maintenance of its tax-exempt status; to identify and report unrelated income; to determine its filing and tax obligations in jurisdictions for which it has nexus and to identify and evaluate other matters that may be considered tax positions. the tax years ending june 30, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 are still open to audit for both federal and state purposes. During the past two years, Audubon has received public funding from the USFWS for work in Panama and Chile, and a significant 3-year project from the inter-american development bank for a regional tourism project covering four countries, The bahamas, belize, Guatemala and Paraguay. Audubon values its close working relationships with our international partners, and makes grants to organizations in support of projects that advance our strategic plan. We believe careful oversight and clear deliverables aid us in building local capacity, and establishing trust to further our support of hemispheric wide conservation projects. All of our grants to foreign entities are based on written contracts that establish specific deliverables and detailed budgets for the expenditure of funds on joint programs of work. We monitor compliance of grant contracts through site visits, written reports, and frequent interaction through calls and emails. Audubon's foreign grants may be in the form of cash and/or equipment. Equipment (other than vehicles) is purchased by Audubon and donated to the recipient organization. Vehicles are purchased locally only after independent quotes are obtained to verify effective use of organizational funds. Form 990, Schedule F, Part IV Audubon invests in domestic and foreign investment vehicles that may own an interest in a foreign corporation, passive foreign investment company, or foreign partnership. Reflecting the expertise and input of staff, chapters, board members, and other volunteers and partners, this "Roadmap for Hemispheric Conservation" enables Audubon to deliver conservation impact at scale. By connecting the work of the Audubon network - chapters, nature centers, national and state staff, volunteers, partners, and other supporters - along each of the four flyways of the Americas, Audubon weaves a seamless web of conservation for both migratory and non-migratory species. Audubon maximizes its conservation results by focusing on programming related to five strategies critical for birds: 1. Putting working lands to work for birds and people: Partnering with landowners to make working lands work for birds, people, and communities. 2. Sharing our seas and shores: Protecting the vital habitat along America's coasts where people and birds intersect. 3. Saving Important Bird Areas: Identifying and protecting the most important places for birds. 4. Shaping a healthy climate and clean energy future: Reducing and mitigating the impacts of climate change and fostering a clean energy future. 5. Creating bird-friendly communities: Working with communities to improve habitats for birds and other wildlife. Our 22 state programs are a powerful force for programmatic coordination across the flyways and our 41 centers introduce more than 1 million visitors each year to the natural world - and inspire them to help protect it. In fiscal 2015, Audubon achieved a number of conservation milestones. We continued our life cycle conservation work to protect the endangered piping plover. Audubon's partnership with the Bahamas National Trust and our use of geolocation and geospatial information analysis led to the identification of the winter habitat for 10% of the Atlantic population, which in turn led to designation by the Bahamian government of the Joulter Cays National Park -- protecting nearly 114,000 acres from unregulated development. Audubon achieved other significant conservation victories. In Florida, Audubon Florida and local chapters gathered more signatures than any other organization to get Amendment 1 (the Land and Water Legacy Act) on the ballot and then worked tirelessly to see the act passed with more than 75% of the vote. Amendment 1 will generate up to $10 billion for conservation work in the state. Audubon's Alaska office spearheaded work that led to critical protections in the Chukchi Sea and our Washington state office and chapters supported legislation that protected forage fish populations. After a decade of intense collaboration, research and advocacy, Audubon Rockies helped develop plans that were accepted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the greater sage-grouse. Form 990, Part III, Line 4b, Program Service Accomplishments: National Conservation: National Conservation Programs provide strategy, expertise and leadership for Audubon's conservation work at both national and field levels, and integrate all efforts for maximum effectiveness. - The Science program maintains a high level of technical competency and knowledge among Audubon's conservation professionals, assisting with conservation planning, ecological analysis, environmental sciences, bird migration studies and coordinating the efforts of thousands of volunteers (citizen scientists) to monitor bird populations and habitats. The experts in Audubon's science program also help identify actions individuals can take to make a difference for conservation in their day-to-day lives that can be used at the field level for education purposes. In September 2014, Audubon announced the results of compelling, groundbreaking science that reveals the existential threat to birds caused by climate change. The report, which has been extensively peer reviewed, is the culmination of six years of research utilizing more than 100 years of observations from our citizen scientists to examine the climatic conditions that 588 North American bird species need to survive, and considers how each will fare in a warming world. The results indicate that 314 species, more than half of America's birds are in peril. - The Public Policy program is a combination of grassroots organizing, advocacy and communications that has earned Audubon a reputation as a respected and influential voice on public policy issues. The public policy program supports large state and multi-state efforts such as: the restoration of large iconic ecosystems, such as the Arctic Slope in Alaska, the wetlands of the Everglades, and the Mississippi River Delta; protection of 2,838 Important Bird Areas covering approximately 400 million acres of public and private lands; and safeguarding common sense laws like the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and the Neotropical Migratory Bird Conservation Act. In August, the Policy Program mobilized more than 45,000 supporters to stop efforts of Duke Energy to severely restrict the effectiveness of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. - The Community Conservation & Education program recognizes that people are at the heart of the conservation solution. By inspiring more people in more places to value and protect the natural world, Audubon is laying the foundation for future conservation. Audubon nature centers are one of the principle elements of Audubon's education work reaching one million visitors each year. Programs like Bird-Friendly Communities, and Lights Out empower people to make bird-friendly lifestyle choices. Partnerships like Toyota TogetherGreen, a collaboration of Audubon and Toyota Motor Co., are helping to diversify the environmental movement through fellowships and grants. - The International Alliances program protects the birds and biodiversity of the Americas, providing science, education, and policy development tools to build the conservation capacities of in-country organizations. Audubon collaborates with international partners to extend a web of protection throughout the Western hemisphere. Years of collaborative research and advocacy by Audubon and our partner the Panama Audubon Society led to vital federal protection - in perpetuity - of the Bay Panama as a wildlife refuge. - Audubon's Climate Initiative launched in September 2014 with the release of the scientific study of the impact of climate change on birds. The goal of Audubon's climate initiative is to create far greater demand for change in policy and in individual action. We will build a sustained grassroots influence among our 1 million members and supporters, and the 47 million birdwatchers in this country to spur action to protect and monitor climate strongholds, places where birds will have the best chance to survive, and influence local, state and federal policies and regulation that reduce greenhouse gases, and pass legislation to combat climate change. Communications efforts include a wide range of publications and strategies to engage a broad and diverse audience in our conservation work. These include audubon.org, social media, email marketing, and publications such as AUDUBON magazine, which reaches approximately 1.5 million readers. In January, Audubon relaunched audubon.org with award-winning design and mobile-ready features. Audubon also launched a community petitions tool to empower our network. In New York City, Audubon partnered with gallery owners and street artists to spread the word about the plight of birds threatened by climate change through street murals painted on rolldown gates and building sides near John James Audubon's grave in upper Manhattan. In April 2015, Audubon acquired the assets of digital applications bearing the Audubon branded nature guides. The guides have been downloaded more than 1 million times, and advance Audubon's mission of educating people about birds. The goal of Audubon's outreach is to motivate individuals and communities to take action for birds and the environment.
