The goal of The Rising is to create and scale a transformational, replicable, group-mentoring model that changes the predictable futures of discounted children who are struggling along the margins. The program is designed to override the effects of the inequities within the education system that are impacting public school students in some of the nation's most blighted communities. In 2015 the program served approximately 6,000 children. 299105 The Rising: HBCUA Campus-Public Schools Literacy and STEM Mentoring Initiative: This innovative, curriculum-based initiative uses a three-tiered group-mentoring model in which corporate volunteers in STEM-related professions coach college students from historically Black colleges and Universities (HBCU's) who work in teams to coach middle school students and support their teachers in science and math classes in under-resourced public schools. It is the mission of The HBCU Rising to help address the growing need and demand our government and national industries have for vast numbers of workers with STEM capabilities. The program was created to ensure that African Americans, the most underrepresented sector in scientific fields, fill the pipeline and have access to competitive, in-demand jobs. In addition, to regular meetings and small group circles (Wellness Mentoring Circles), we also serve the entire school population through large-group assemblies (Super Mentor Assemblies), which showcase transformative speakers, skilled in the healing arts.
