Hot Spots are those shoreline and waterways where volunteers find an inordinate amount of waste at every cleanup.Through Marine Education: SOS presented in over 50 schools and over 2,500 students participated with SOS.Through Beach and River Cleanups: Over 5,000 volunteers participated in at least one shoreline cleanup. Management has considered its tax positions and believes that all of the positions taken by the Organization in its federal and state exempt organization tax returns are more likely than not to be sustained upon examination. The Organizations returns are subject to examination by federal and state taxing authorities, generally for three and four years respectively, after they are filed. Form 990, Part VI, Line 11b: Form 990 Review Process The completed 990 is incorporated into the board meeting packet for the next scheduled meeting. Board members are requested/expected to review the 990 prior to the meeting and come prepared with questions or comments. Assuming there are no issues to be referred back to our accountant, the board votes to accept the 990 and the vote is recorded in the minutes of the meeting. Form 990, Part VI, Line 12c: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts Save Our Shores has a Conflict of Interest Policy. As individuals join Save Our Shores they are given a packet of information and an orientation during which all material in the packet is reviewed. The Conflict of Interest Policy is one of the documents new board members receive. The policy is enforced in part by the honor system, i.e., with the expectation that a board member will disclose any potential conflicts. Generally when board votes relative to contract award, there is a call for disclosure of potential conflicts of interest prior taking the vote. Form 990, Part VI, Line 15b: Compensation Review and Approval Process for Officers and Key Employees The Executive Director's original salary is determined by considering local market salary studies, financial position of the organization at hiring and level of experience of the final candidate. ED's salary is determined on an annual basis by a 360 performance review with scoring and weighting to determine if a salary increase is merited or not.
