THE MAC'S GOAL IS TO SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE THE INVOLVEMENT OF UNDER-REPRESENTED MINORITY SCIENTISTS IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE ASCB AND CELL BIOLOGY. TO ACHIEVE THIS GOAL, THE MAC OFFERS MANY PROGRAMS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO PROMOTE THE RECRUITMENT AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF MINORITY SCIENTISTS. THE RELATIVELY SMALL POOL OF MINORITY SCIENTISTS WITH AN INTEREST IN CELL BIOLOGY REQUIRES THAT MAC ALSO DEVELOP PROGRAMS FOR UNDERGRADUATE AND PRE-DOCTORAL STUDENTS TO ASSIST THEM IN ACHIEVING CAREERS IN BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH. A LONG RANGE GOAL OF THE MAC IS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE NATION'S EFFORT TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF UNDER-REPRESENTED MINORITY SCIENTISTS.</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>IN 2015, ASCB PROVIDED SEVERAL KINDS OF AWARDS OUTSIDE THE US: 1. TRAVEL AWARD TO ATTEND ASCB'S ANNUAL MEETING: TWO TYPES, BASIC TRAVEL AWARDS AND CHILDCARE AWARDS. THESE AWARDS REQUIRE THE SUBMISSION OF A SCIENTIFIC ABSTRACT, AN APPLICATION, CV, AND LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION FROM AN ADVISOR. AWARDS ARE REVIEWED BY TWO REVIEWERS FROM THE ASCB EDUCATION COMMITTEE AND SCORED ON THE BASIS OF FINANCIAL NEED, QUALITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL'S RESEARCH IN THE SCIENTIFIC ABSTRACT, AND STRENGTH OF THE RECOMMENDATION LETTER. THE TRAVEL AWARD ADMINISTRATOR TRIES TO ENSURE EVEN GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION. FUNDS AWARDED TO INDIVIDUALS OUTSIDE THE US WERE MOSTLY SMALL GRANTS OF $300-$700 TO SUPPORT TRAVEL TO THE US SO THAT THE INDIVIDUAL COULD ATTEND ASCB'S ANNUAL MEETING. MOST OF THESE INDIVIDUALS PICKED UP THESE FUNDS AT THIS MEETING. FIVE INDIVIDUALS RECEIVED AWARDS FOR AMOUNTS BETWEEN $350 AND $1,000 TO OFFSET THEIR CHILDCARE EXPENSES SO THEY COULD ATTEND ASCB'S ANNUAL MEETING. 2. AWARDS TO SUPPORT EFFORTS TO CONVENE LOCAL MEETINGS ON A TOPIC RELATED TO CELL BIOLOGY: THESE AWARDS ARE GIVEN WITH THE GOAL OF PROMOTING SCIENTIFIC COMMUNICATION AND FOSTERING LOCAL COMMUNITIES OF CELL BIOLOGISTS. ASCB MEMBER GRADUATE STUDENT AND POSTDOC APPLICANTS MUST PROVIDE CVS, A DESCRIPTION OF THE MEETING THEY WANT TO CONVENE (WITH SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS), AN OUTLINE OF THE SESSION, INCLUDING WHO IS EXPECTED TO ATTEND, AND A PROPOSED BUDGET. ONLY ONE OF THESE GRANTS WAS GIVEN OUTSIDE THE US IN 2015, IN THE AMOUNT OF $1,500. 3. AWARDS TO RECOGNIZE MERIT OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH (KALUZA PRIZE): IN 2015 ASCB MEMBER GRADUATE STUDENTS WERE INVITED TO SUBMIT A ONE-PAGE ESSAY ARTICULATING WHAT SCHOLARLY ACHIEVEMENTS THEY ARE MOST PROUD OF AND WHY THOSE RESULTS COULD NOT HAVE BEEN ACHIEVED WITHOUT THEIR SPECIFIC CONTRIBUTION. AN ADVISOR RECOMMENDATION LETTER WAS REQUIRED AS WELL. THE SELECTION COMMITTEE WAS CHAIRED BY THE ASCB PRESIDENT AND APPLICATIONS WERE EVALUATED ON THE BASIS OF THE SIGNIFICANCE AND ORIGINALITY OF THE SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENTS IN THE BROADLY DEFINED FIELD OF CELL BIOLOGY AND BASIC BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES. THE WINNER RECEIVED A PRIZE OF $5,000 AND AN ADDITIONAL $400 TO OFFSET TRAVEL EXPENSES. 4. COMPASS (ASCB'S COMMITTEE OF POSTDOCS AND GRADUATE STUDENTS) OUTREACH GRANTS PROVIDE FUNDS TO ASCB MEMBERS TO PROMOTE SCIENCE OUTREACH PROJECTS: APPLICANTS MUST: BE MEMBERS; PROVIDE A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EVENT; PROVIDE THE ORGANIZER'S CV; PROVIDE A BUDGET FOR THE EVENT; AND WORK WITH A COMPASS MEMBER LIAISON. TWO INTERNATIONAL EVENTS WERE SPONSORED IN 2015, ONE AT $256 AND THE OTHER AT $519. 5. CELLDANCE PRODUCTION GRANTS: ASCB MEMBER LABS SUBMIT APPLICATIONS IN HOPES TO BE SELECTED TO RECEIVE A $1,000 GRANT TO HELP FUND PRODUCTION OF THEIR "TELL YOUR OWN STORY" VIDEO FEATURING LIVE CELL IMAGING AIMED AT THE WIDEST POSSIBLE AUDIENCE -- THE NEWS, THE WEB, BIOLOGY EDUCATORS, AND THE CURIOUS WORLD. ONE INTERNATIONAL APPLICANT RECEIVED A $1,000 CELLDANCE GRANT IN 2015.</ExplanationTxt>
