SVUDL designed and led 10 workshops & tournaments in 2015; 129 debaters learned topic research skills and policy debate tactics and strategy and competed with each other; more than double the number in 2014. SVUDL also trained 62 students in advanced techniques of policy debate at our annual Summer Institute. SVUDL identified student leaders at each school to lead recruitment, retention and program growth on their campuses. SVUDL provided nine teachers who served as coaches for the afterschool programs with 40+ hours each of training and support, in order that they could lead practices using voice and argument to reach students disengaged by traditional approaches. SVUDL trained and supported three teachers who in leading a pilot of flagship debate courses to help 98 students develop strong academic skills during the school day. SVUDL recruited and trained 28 more teachers to review, adapt, improve and adopt SVUDL's material into their lesson plans in English, History and Science. 21052 College and Career Success. SVUDL designed and lead four college access and career pipeline workshops featuring accomplished Silicon Valley professionals, and helped 25 graduating debaters develop 10-year plans for academic and career success. SVUDL partnered with HP Enterprise and lawyers at leading Silicon Valley firms, such as Kirkland & Ellis and Mayer Brown, to provide students access to the legal profession and long term mentorship opportunities to help them advance through high school, college, and beyond. The fair market value of the the rent is $9,750 which is reflected as an in-kind donation in the audited financial statements for the calendar year 12-31-15. Form 990, Part VI, Line 11b: Form 990 Review Process The tax returns are prepared by an outside accounting firm. After completion of said returns, the organization is sent a draft of the tax returns to be reviewed and examined. The organization distributes copies of the complete returns to the board of directors. If all items are found to be acceptable, an authorization is signed and provided to the outside accounting firm to process, sign and provide copies of the returns to be filed (paper or electronically) with the designated governmental agencies. The tax returns are then signed by the organization, stamped with certified return receipt and timely placed in the mail for filing, or the form 8879 is provided to the outside accounting firm allowing electronic filing. Form 990, Part VI, Line 12c: Explanation of Monitoring and Enforcement of Conflicts Under our conflict of interest policy (the "policy"), each director and officer (each, an "interested person"), is required to annually sign a statement that affirms such interested person: (i) has received a copy of the policy; (ii) has read and understands the policy; (iii) has agreed to comply with the policy; and (iv) understands that we are a charitable organization and, in order to maintain our federal tax exemption, we must engage primarily in activities that accomplish one or more of our tax exempt purposes. We also conduct periodic reviews as required by the policy regarding, among other things, whether compensation arrangements and benefits are reasonable and a result of arm's length bargaining, and whether partnerships, joint ventures and arrangements with management organizations conform to our written policies, do not result in inurement, impermissible private benefit or in an excess benefit transaction. Form 990, Part VI, Line 15a: Compensation Review & Approval Process - CEO, Top Management The SVUDL Board used non-profit compensation data from two commercially available surveys to review market compensation for this position considering geography, type of non-profit work performed, organization size, position, title, and responsibilities. The executive director's compensation was set by a unanimous vote of the full board, and documented in the offer letter to the Executive Director, after considering this material, without any participation by the Executive Director. It is the intent of the SVUDL board to follow substantially the same process each year in reviewing and adjusting as appropriate the Executive Director compensation.
