LAFLA's legal priorities encompass the following: supporting families; preserving quality, affordable housing; maintaining economic stability; promoting safety, security, and health; serving populations with special vulnerabilities, and protecting human and civil rights. LAFLA provides a full range of legal services for individuals and families including limited, extended and contested cases in several substantive areas: housing & eviction defense, government benefits, family law, consumer, employment, immigrants' rights and community economic development. Services include counsel and advice, pro per assistance, representation before all courts and administrative agencies, affirmative litigation, policy advocacy, trainings and community legal education. To assist us with meeting the legal needs of the community, LAFLA provides a plethora of volunteer opportunities that in 2015 resulted in 1,526 volunteers providing 49,176 in kind hours in pro bono and volunteer services. Our staff and volunteer resources enabled LAFLA to have a significant victory on behalf of homeless people in Los Angeles by obtaining a preliminary injunction to the stop the City of Los Angeles' illegal seizure and destruction of homeless people's property including medications, tents and blankets. Form 990, Part III, line 2 LAFLA is hosting a two-year pilot housing preservation project from Spring 2015 through Spring 2017 that was funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development ("HUD"), Equal Justice Works, and AmeriCorps VISTA. This project, the VISTA Affordable Housing Preservation Project ("VAHPP"), achieved impressive outcomes in preserving at-risk housing in Los Angeles, serving over 580 project-based Section 8 tenants and successfully preserving over 200 units of expiring project-based Section 8 units in the Greater Los Angeles region. VAHPP is hosted at 12 different legal aid host sites around the country in major metropolitan cities such as New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago, where low-income tenants are facing serious affordable housing shortages. Of all 12 host sites, the VAHPP program launched in Los Angeles has proven to be the most successful in the nation, with a significantly higher number of tenants engaged and units preserved than other major cities.
