<Desc>Musical Performances - See Schedule OIn 2015, Caramoor presented a total of 57 stand-alone musical performances and day-long, multi-set festivals to audience members in venues throughout our campus, including the 1,700-seat Venetian Theater, the 500-seat Spanish Courtyard, the 220-seat Music Room of the historic Rosen House, the Sunken Garden, Tapestry Hedge, Picnic Lawn, and Friends' Field. While maintaining our commitment to the core classical repertoire, including symphonic, opera, and chamber music, we also presented a wide array of other genres, including jazz, American Songbook, and American roots music, as well as programs designed for families with young children. The 70th annual Summer Music Festival, which ran from June 20 to August 2 and included 29 concerts and multi-set festivals, was the highlight of our musical offerings. It opened with Beethoven's iconic Ninth Symphony and a co-commissioned world premiere from Christopher Theofanidis. The concert, which was broadcast live on WQXR, included soprano Jennifer Check; the Orchestra of St. Luke's, in residence since 1979; The Collegiate Chorale; and conductor Peter Oundjian.Additional symphonic performances included violinist Jennifer Koh and the Orchestra of St. Luke's with conductor Nicholas McGegan and our Festival Finale with pianist and 2015 Artist-in-Residence Helene Grimaud, the Orchestra of St. Luke's, and conductor Pablo Heras-Casado. Chamber music took center stage with performances by Edward Arron & Friends; PROJECT Trio; the Calidore, Jasper, Ariel, and Dover quartets, all participants of our Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence program; Alexi Kenney and Renana Gutman; the Eroica Trio; Gabriel Kahane and Rob Moose; and guitarists Ana Vidovic and Lukasz Kuropaczewski. Our Bel Canto at Caramoor season included two chamber performances and two concert operas as well as short, pre-opera recitals. The season opened with a chamber recital by members of the 2015 Bel Canto Young Artists program. On July 11 we presented Donizetti's second Paris opera, La Favorite in its original French language version. On July 16 the Bel Canto Young Artists returned to our Spanish Courtyard stage to present vocal chamber works by Alessandro and Domenico Scarlatti. On July 25th, as a departure from our typical 19th Century Bel Canto repertoire, we presented a staged and costumed version of Francis Poulenc's mid-20th century opera Dialogues of the Carmelites. In 2015 Caramoor and Jazz at Lincoln Center embarked on a new collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center to combine the best of New York City jazz with the great jazz legacy of Westchester's premiere outdoor venue. On July 18 a lineup of jazz legends and rising stars curated by Jazz at Lincoln Center performed at five locations on Caramoor's campus. Participating artists included headliners Wynton Marsalis with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as well as Cecile McLorin Salvant; the Orrin Evans Quartet; the Joey Alexander Trio; Sammy Miller and the Congregation; Bryan Carter Quintet Plays Ray Charles; the Jerome Jennings Quintet; the Jazz at Lincoln Center Youth Orchestra featuring Joey Alexander; The Amigos; Alphonso Horne; Ben Flocks; Jon Lampley; and David Linard. On July 24 pianist Jon Batiste performed on Caramoor's Spanish Courtyard stage. The fifth annual American Roots Music Festival was an all-day presentation of bluegrass, folk, and country music. Singer-songwriter Lucinda Williams headlined a line-up that included Parker Millsap, Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams, Jessy Carolina and The Hot Mess, Kristin Andreassen Band, Mason Porter, Spuyten Duyvil, Walkabout Clearwater Chorus, Matt Turk, and Cole Quest and the City Pickers. The day also included activities for children and the Social Music Hour Workshop. In addition, on July 10 Sara Watkins, Aoife O'Donovan, and Sarah Jarosz came to Caramoor for the only NYC-area summer appearance of the "I'm With Her Tour."The Dancing at Dusk series is the cornerstone of our family music programming. In 2015 the series included four events: Israeli folk dancing with Danny Pollock and Tavche Gravche, Italian folk dancing with Alessandra Belloni and I Giullari di Piazza, Turkish music and belly dancing with Kaeshi Chai, and Greek dancing with the band Ethos with Kostas Psarros. The goal of this series is to introduce children, from toddlers to pre-teens, to a wide range of music genres in a welcoming and accessible manner. We also presented our family-friendly July 4th celebration, Pops, Patriots, and Fireworks, featuring baritone Ryan Silverman, the Westchester Symphonic Winds, and host Robert Sherman. In 2014 we premiered In the Garden of Sonic Delights, a regional exhibit of 15 commissioned, site-specific sound art installations. Sonic Delights built on Caramoor's many assets and rich tradition of experimentation to provide an entirely new way for visitors to experience our campus and other sites in Westchester County. Given the artistic merit of this successful project, we again presented In the Garden of Sonic Delights to audiences in 2015. With continued artistic leadership from Stephan Moore, the 2015 exhibit was focused on Caramoor's campus in Katonah, NY (with the exception of one work at Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture) and consisted of nine of the sound installations commissioned in 2014 for the original exhibit. On September 27 we presented our 2015 Fall Festival with two performances by the innovative chamber orchestra The Knights and acclaimed cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The day began with a family concert at 1pm featuring interactive games, a discussion, and performances of works by Dvorak, Mendelssohn, and The Knights' Colin Jacobsen. In the wide-ranging feature concert at 4pm, The Knights again teamed up with Yo-Yo Ma.Caramoor presents chamber music-both classical and American Roots-as well as talks and lectures in the spring and fall in the intimate 220-seat Music Room of its historic Rosen House. Performances in spring 2015 included the Edward Arron & Friends chamber ensemble, the Horszowski Trio, and artists from two of Caramoor's young artist mentoring programs: the 2015 Schwab Vocal Rising Stars and the Calidore String Quartet, the 2014-2015 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence. In addition, our Roots Music @ Music Room series continued to grow with a performance by Don Flemons, Kristin Andreassen, and Jefferson Homer on March 7 and a performance by Willie Watson and Cricket Tell the Weather on April 11.In addition to presenting chamber music, we also presented a series of lectures and talks in the Music Room during spring 2015. We commenced on April 14 with a chamber talk with Max Mandel, an alumnus of our Evnin Rising Stars mentoring program. In "Age is Just a Number" Mr. Mandel, with the Horszowski Trio, explored the concept of age in classical music, from composers dying young to our fascination with performers in their youth. On May 5 Dr. Richard Kogan, a Juilliard-trained concert pianist and Harvard-educated psychiatrist, presented a lecture/concert entitled "The Mind and Music of Chopin." Mr. Mandel returned to Caramoor on June 2 to present a second chamber talk, "Giant Moods: A Summer of Beethoven."In an effort to present excellent and diverse music to a wider audience, Caramoor formed collaborations with two organizations: Waveny and the Katonah Museum of Art. Caramoor@KMA is a collaboration between two of the region's most vital cultural resources, with Caramoor curating a series of performances by young and mid-career artists at KMA's outdoor Sculpture Garden. 2015 activities included performances by Spuyten Duyvil, The Swingaroos, and members of The Harlem Chamber Players. Caramoor also hosted a chamber music concert at the Carriage Barn at Waveny Park in New Canaan, CT, formerly home of the Waveny Chamber Music Society. On March 29 we presented the Calidore String Quartet, our 2014-2015 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence.</Desc>

<Desc>Rosen House, Gardens and Estate - See Schedule OThe Rosen House is a Mediterranean Revival villa at the center of the Caramoor campus. In recognition of the unsurpassed quality and great quantity of European period rooms incorporated into the fabric of the house, Caramoor was recognized as nationally significant on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011, a distinction that it shares with sites such as Vizcaya in Miami, FL and Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA. Built in the 1930s, it is an incomparable concert venue, a unique classroom for visiting schoolchildren, and a haven for the creative growth of young musicians. In 2015, 1,955 people also visited the historic house for teas, musicales, and tours.Gardens and Estate: The 90-acre Caramoor campus, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places at the state-wide level of significance in 2001 and at the national level of significance in 2011, is comprised of four primary buildings-today known as the Rosen House, the Administration Building, the Gifford Residence, and the Diane Moss Education Center-as well as ancillary buildings and landscape features, gardens, lawns, and woodland areas. A central focus of the campus is the Venetian Theater, a tented, 1,700-seat venue.45 acres of the campus is deer-fenced and open to the visiting public, including the Sunken Garden, established in 1912; a Mediterranean Revival pavilion; an alley of cedar trees; and a number of gardens designed in the 1930s by landscape architect and Katonah resident Robert Ludlow Fowler, Jr. The Caramoor estate provides an incomparable setting for our cultural programs by serving as a stage for music performances and contextualizing the concerts that occur here; providing a learning laboratory for arts-in-education and emerging artist programs; and providing an idyllic haven for more than 40,000 visitors annually.</Desc>

<Desc>Mentoring - See Schedule OThe development of emerging artists is central to Caramoor's mission and woven into much of our programming. Through our five mentoring programs, we identify, train, and promote the next generation of vocal and instrumental artists. In 2015, over 56 young musicians participated. Through these programs, we have worked with some of the finest musicians of the next generation and helped them cross the threshold from their student years into the early stages of their professional careers. For many of these artists, this is the beginning of a longstanding relationship with Caramoor, as they return throughout their careers to perform for our audiences.Evnin Rising StarsFor over two decades there has been an institutional focus on training instrumental artists. Pianist, conductor, and composer Andre Previn established the mentoring program now known as the Evnin Rising Stars at Caramoor in 1992; as his tenure at Caramoor concluded, conductor Peter Oundjian took on artistic leadership of the program. Since 2008 violinist Pamela Frank has acted as Artistic Director for the Evnin Rising Stars. Each fall, eight to ten instrumentalists come together with three distinguished artists-past musicians have included Atar Arad, Kim Kashkashian, Ani Kavafian, Marcy Rosen, Ronald Thomas, and Donald Weilerstein, among others-for a week of intensive chamber music rehearsals, coaching, and performances of works from the heart of the chamber music repertoire. At the end of the residency the musicians perform for audiences in the intimate Music Room of the historic Rosen House on Caramoor's campus, giving them valuable exposure and performance experience. The Evnin Rising Stars program has identified and brought over a hundred promising musicians to Caramoor. As the years have passed, alumni of the program have established themselves as artists in the world of classical music performance. In 2015, eight young Rising Stars partnered with violinist Pamela Frank, violist Kim Kashkashian, and cellist Peter Wiley in a week-long residency program of coaching and rehearsals. The program culminated in two performances at Caramoor.Edward Arron & FriendsIn 1999 the program now known as Edward Arron & Friends grew out of the great success of Caramoor's Evnin Rising Stars young artist mentoring program. Over 100 instrumentalists on the cusp of their professional careers have participated in the Evnin Rising Stars in the last two decades; Edward Arron & Friends serves as a bridge between that opportunity and Caramoor's general music presenting programs. It has thus far enabled 58 young artists to return to Caramoor for a residency week during the Summer Music Festival as well as additional performance opportunities throughout the year. The program is led by cellist Edward Arron, who began his affiliation with Caramoor as a Rising Star, and is now the artistic director of Edward Arron & Friends. Its focus is to foster the intimacy and immediacy of chamber music, cultivate collaborative music-making, and engage audiences in the excitement of musical performance. In 2015, seven young artists participated in the residency program and performed twice during the year.Bel Canto Young ArtistsIn 1998 Will Crutchfield established the Bel Canto Young Artists program. Each year 35 young opera singers are selected to receive rigorous training in bel canto singing and to fill solo performance slots that arise during the Summer Music Festival. Six weeks in length, the program includes daily group classes by Caramoor staff and guests. Members of the program also understudy the principal roles of each summer's operas, participating in full-scale rehearsals that provide them with the invaluable opportunity to test their skills in a complete part. They also gain performance experience and exposure with audiences in pre-opera recital concerts. In 2015, 35 young opera singers took part in this program. Activities included a six-week residency, two stand-alone chamber recitals, pre-opera recitals, and two main-stage concert operas.Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-ResidenceIn 1999, with generous underwriting support from The Ernst C. Stiefel Foundation, Caramoor established a residency program for young chamber ensembles. In performing at Caramoor throughout the year, the quartet gains recognition and performance experience. In turn, the quartet hones their mentoring skills with didactic performances and workshops for approximately 1,000 area schoolchildren who attend as part of the Student Strings arts-in-education program. The quartet also partners with a young composer on a new commission which is premiered during Caramoor's Summer Music Festival. In 2015, five current and past participants in the Stiefel residency performed at Caramoor: the Ariel Quartet (2008-2009), the Jasper String Quartet (2009-2011), the Dover Quartet (2013-2014), the Calidore String Quartet (2014-2015), and the Aizuri Quartet (2015-2016). The Calidore String Quartet completed its residency with performances in the spring and summer. The Aizuri Quartet began its residency in the fall with a concert. In addition, the current resident quartets led arts outreach at local schools, engaging thousands of students.Schwab Vocal Rising StarsThe Schwab Vocal Rising Stars, established in 2009 and under the artistic leadership of the New York Festival of Song's Steven Blier and Michael Barrett, is a program for young vocal artists. The initiative focuses on singing outside the realm of opera, including the song recital and vocal chamber music. The week-long residency offers intensive daily coaching, rehearsals, and workshops with mentors and leaders in the field and concludes with performances at Caramoor and at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City.In 2015, five young singers participated in the week-long Vocal Rising Stars program under the guidance of Michael Barrett and Steven Blier. The program culminated in two performances; the first at Caramoor and the second at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City.Arts-in-EducationSince 1974, Caramoor has provided students with arts enrichment opportunities that utilize our exceptional facilities, visiting artists, and dedicated staff, while meeting NYS education standards. We place an emphasis on reaching out to schools from under-resourced communities, in particular schools in Yonkers such as the Casimir Pulaski School, the Kahlil Gibran Elementary School, and Scholastic Academy. In 2015 we welcomed 6,500 students to our campus, with nearly half of those students participating through our Underserved Youth Arts Initiative.During the year we also expanded the geographic reach of our Underserved Youth Arts Initiative, which provides scheduling priority, fee reductions, fee waivers, and bus transportation support to classes from underserved school districts. In an effort spearheaded by Education Coordinator Scott Ellison, we formed new partnerships with Foxfire School and PEARLS Hawthorne School in Yonkers and Hamilton Elementary in Mount Vernon. This has resulted in 410 children from these schools participating in our classes over 6 program days. Our goal is to sustain these new relationships, with classes from these schools returning to Caramoor on an annual basis. In the spring of 2015 we rolled out The Renaissance and The Middle Ages at Caramoor, a program adapted from our earlier A Day in the Renaissance. The program now focuses on the music, art, architecture, and falconry from both periods. Students are engaged in comparing and contrasting the two periods while learning about the music and culture of each. The change in programming has also allowed us to highlight a wider variety of furniture, decorative objects, and artwork from the historic Rosen House on our campus. In this first, pilot year of the program we focused on feedback from teachers and students and we will be making adjustments accordingly. We are also developing a version of the program which we can provide to smaller groups of students during the winter months.</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>The historic Rosen House, with its period rooms and collections, was open to the public for tours in 2015. In addition, the archival materials are a great source of humanities research in a number of fields. One example is the documentation relating to the Rosens' patronage of Leon Theremin and championing of his early electronic music instrument. This material has been a source of study for theremin researchers, including Robert Moog, who began building theremins in the 1950s as a high school student and later went on to design the Moog synthesizer and Albert Glinsky, Theremin's biographer and the author of Theremin: Ether Music and Espionage. The Rosen House collection demonstrates a tremendous breadth of art objects, furniture, and archival material. The art and furniture encompass over 1,000 cataloged objects, including European furniture from the 16th-19th centuries; European medieval and Renaissance paintings, sculpture, textiles, and decorative objects; and Asian statuary. There are also approximately 100 light fixtures and decorative elements by Edward F. Caldwell and Company dating from the 1930s. Other categories include photographs, textiles, early 20th-century costumes, and musical instruments. In addition, there is a wealth of ephemeral material relating to the Rosens, the development of the Caramoor campus, and the establishment of the Summer Music Festival. Objects from the collection displayed in the Music Room of the Rosen House-including a wooden 16th-century Italian ceiling, French and Swiss 16th-century stained glass, Renaissance tapestries, and 17th-century furniture-create an incomparable setting for chamber music performances. The collection also provides primary material for Caramoor's arts-in-education programs. In programs such as The Renaissance and The Middle Ages at Caramoor, Chinese Arts & Culture, and What's in a House? students participate in guided tours and are encouraged to use the collection as inspiration for their own writing, drawing, and music-making.</ExplanationTxt>

In 2015, over 200 people volunteered part-time at Caramoor in a variety of capacities. The majority of volunteers act as ushers at Caramoor's year-round music presentations.
