This program worked on 1,211 cases. 473788 Asian & Pacific Islander Community Outreach Project: Advocates for language services in civil courts, administrative proceedings, and other government agencies for limited-English proficient clients; Provides legal help in all areas of practice including family law, immigration and government benefits in Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese, Khmer and Thai. This program worked on 552 cases. 2 Year Housing Preservation Project: The impact of these efforts was recently expended through the initiation of the Los Angeles County Housing Preservation Project ("LACHPP"), which was made possible through funding from the State Bar of California- bank settlement proceeds Community Redevelopment Grant. This has allowed LAFLA to expand the scope of the project to include buildings with expiring covenants and neighborhoods that fall into pockets of Los Angeles County (both incorporated and unincorporated) where the most vulnerable households are facing homelessness due to conversion of their homes to market rate rents and the loss of federal, state and local subsidy programs and rent protection covenants. The program continues to provide critically-needed, comprehensive legal and capacity building services to residents living in subsidized housing in underserved areas of Los Angeles county. LAFLA's legal priorities encompass the following: supporting families; preserving quality, affordable housing; maintaining economic stability; promoting safety, security, and health; serving populations with special vulnerabilities, and protecting human & civil rights. LAFLA provides a full range of legal services for individuals and families including limited, extended and contested cases in several substantive areas: housing & eviction defense, government benefits, family law, consumer, employment, immigrants' rights and community economic development. Services include counsel and advice, pro per assistance, representation before all courts and administrative agencies, affirmative litigation, policy advocacy, trainings and community legal education. To assist us with meeting the legal needs of the community, LAFLA provides a plethora of volunteer opportunities that in 2016 resulted in 1,237 volunteers providing 47,005 in kind hours in pro bono and volunteer services. LAFLA achieved a significant victory with the publication of an unlawful detainer appeal which established that a rental agreement for an unpermitted unit is void, and therefore a landlord is barred from collecting rent or using the unlawful detainer procedures to enforce the collection of rent, thus invalidating a notice to pay or quit.
