The Piyali Learning Centre (PLC) is a joint venture between PACE and the Rotary Club of Metropolitan Calcutta. PLC's focus is on girls' education but PLC also empowers women and improves the standard of living through out the entire community. 2016 Accomplishments at PACE Learning Center at PiyaliSAFE House: Started in November 2015, but has further developed with regards to housing seven students, fully furnished.Live In Village Concert: Four bands had come out to PLC to give a concert where all villagers were invited to attend. It was a great success with over 300 attendees. VT Centre Inauguration: The Inauguration of the VT Centre, which is a Pavilion that has been created for our Vocational Training Centre Programs. Current Adult Literacy classes are held here, along with Unarmed Security Guard Training. To date, there have been over 100 graduates in the NIS Unarmed Security Guard Training. Sports Equipment Volleyball net, racquetball net, etc.: Through a GG we have been able to purchase sporting equipment for the After School Enrichment Program. This includes new balls, Gymnastic Pads, Volleyball Court/Net, Racquet Ball net. These supplies have enhanced the Sports Classes for the students.Garden Development: The garden has gone through tremendous development. Throughout the year vegetables are being supplied to the Kitchen for consumption. This includes Tomatoes, Ladies Fingers, Onions, Potatoes, Pumpkin, Chilies, Eggplant, etc. This organic vegetable plot also serves as a demo plot to local farmers who are learning organic practices. Guest House Development: The Guest House has been completely developed for the PACE Volunteer Program. It has a capacity to hold 11 people maximum. This accommodates large groups. Wellness Centre Funded by an Indian CSR donation, the wellness centre was founded as a place where students can practice meditation, yoga and counseling. It created a special environment at PLC with a gazebo and nature.AVPN Conference: PACE attended the Asia Venture Pacific Network Conference to connect NGOs to Social Investors. This connected PACE to many people in India who wanted to help with project development. Monsoon Kits: This was the first year that students received monsoon kits to protect them from the terrible weather of the monsoon season. Sponsored by RC San Luis Obispo de Tolosa and RCCM, the students received gym bags, umbrellas, rain jackets and rain shoesInside the Glow: A project designed by NY fashion photographer Tiffany Bloomfield focuses on the positive dreams that PLC students have. Each student did a photo shoot with Tiffany to demonstrate what their dream is and when they are the happiest. Along with the photo shoot is a handwritten letter that is sent across the world on a monthly basis. In return, the students receive letters from hundred of Inspiring women that encourage the girls to not lose hope and to pursue their dreams. Guitar Classes: For a few years PLC had guitars but did not have anyone to teach it. This past year, a Guitar Instructor was located and has been working with the students in the After School Program for nearly a year. The students even performed in the Cultural Program.Counselor for one month: For one month PLC had a counselor who was working with our high-risk students and helping them cope with the problems that they were facing at home. Pastor Luther Visit and Teacher Training: A group of people came from Incarnation Church to assess the vitality of a yearly volunteer program at PLC. The time spent brainstorming possible project ideas, getting to know the students and Teachers. Several of the visitors even led Teacher Training to talk about new theories and teaching styles. Peaceworks: First Aid Kit, Puberty Kit, Water Survey: Peacework partnered with PACE for the second time. Bringing six students from Ohio State University to volunteer for two weeks conducting a water survey in the village, first aid training and first aid kits and talking about womens health with the women in the Mukta program. Live in School: Concert with Classical Guitarist from France: A Classical guitar band from France came to PLC to perform for the students from class 3 onwards. The students thoroughly enjoyed the performance and heard a genre of music that they never knew existed. LKG Tables for Nursery: A donor sponsored the construction of 30 tables for the Nursery students to aid them in their studies. These tables provide the girls with the proper tools to learn how to write and to take care of their belongings. Interact Fundraiser and Art Exhibition: The Interact Club held a school wide fundraiser with all students by selling admission tickets for games and snacks. On multiple occasions, they also sold their artwork to guest to help fund their dustbin project. Creative Writing Workshop with Anjoli Joseph: U. K based Indian author, Anjoli Joseph, led a weeklong creative writing workshop with students in class 4 onwards. Eye-Exam Camp Sunetra Eye Care Clinic in Kolkata led a free weeklong eye exam camp for all the students and staffs of PLC. The Clinic even filled the prescriptions and eyeglasses of students free of cost. Training with Margaret and Dipa on Inclusive Education: One of the leading educators, Margaret Waterworth, along with NRI educator Dipa led a workshop on inclusive education and how to incorporate slow learners into a class. They provided great suggestions on how to identify when a student is facing a difficulty at home and how the Teachers can better serve these types of students. Unarmed Security Guard Training with Keertika: The unarmed security guard training project was started at the VT Centre. This project sponsors local men and women to become trained unarmed security guards with guaranteed job placement. To date over 200 people have been trained and over 150 have taken up employment. CSR donation from Titagarh for backpacks: Indian Cooperation, Titagarh, has made a CSR donation for the 2017 school backpacks. Water Bottle Distribution from PACE Director Dr. Irina Francken: Over 600 reusable bpa free water bottles were donated to the school to ensure that the girls can remain hydrated hygienically. This was the first time that the students have received high quality bottles that they could keep for themselves. Flower Planting with Interact Club: The Interact club created the VT Centre flower garden to help celebrate service day. The Interactors wanted to help out the environment by creating a space that insects and animals could thrive in. Field Trip to Bodega for Childrens Day: For Childrens day the students from class 3- class 5 were hosted at a very well known nice restaurant in Kolkata. The restaurant was shut down for all of the students to enjoy a day of great food, games, dancing, laughter and fun. Training with Anindita Banerji: Multiple training sessions were led by Anindita Banerji who is a very well known Teacher at the Loreto schools. She is a very innovative person whom has inspired the PLC Teachers to go above and beyond through the emphasis of co-curricular classes in the schedule. Mukta Literacy Curriculum: The Adult Literacy curriculum was meticulously developed by French Volunteer, Louise Pham, and Chandana, the current ALP teacher. Together they were able to create a month-by-month manual that would help the women become literate and competent in Maths, Life Skills, Writing and Basic English within two years. This is the first time that such curriculum has been created which includes movies, games, books, cooking classes, field trips, etc.Adult Literacy went for field trip for the first time to Science City: The Adult Literacy class went on a field trip for the first time. They were able to use this time to apply all of the knowledge that they have learned from their class with Louise and Chandana. Block Printing for Mukta Product: This is the first year that the Mukta program has taken on the same block printing techniques that are used for making sarees. The Mukta team went to a factory where silk sarees are made. There they were able to learn how to make the paint, maintain the blocks, and properly print the design on the fabric. This has significantly improved the quality of product that the women are making. New Uniforms and logo stitching donation: The students received their new uniforms, which matches their intelligence and creativity. These new uniforms have inspired confidence. The style is similar to what is used at mainstream schools, plus the bottoms are skorts (skirt and shorts) so it matches the girls active lifestyle. The logo stitching on the uniforms was donated by a local business that manufactures children clothing. Interact Club - Trash Management Project: Interactors designed their own trash bin project to help fight the problem of trash in Piyali.
