APFE is a vehicle for establishing and maintaining creative, quality partnerships to support the Atlanta Public Schools and help improve school achievement. The program is based on the belief that businesses and communities that are actively involved in the school system gain a deeper understanding of what is needed to make a positive difference in the lives of Atlanta's school children. APFE offers the Atlanta-area business community and various nonprofit, civic, higher education, religious, social, and professional organizations the best opportunity to directly strengthen their commitments to public education. There are currently over 400 partners participating in over 450 partnerships with Atlanta's public schools and programs, with many Organizations partnering with more than one school or program. APFE is a 501(c)3 organization that was founded in 1981 to provide a vehicle for the active participation of Atlanta-area businesses, and the larger community, in supporting the Atlanta Public School System (APS). APFE is governed by an 8-member board of advisors (currently chaired by Ann Cramer) consisting of representatives from Atlanta's business, civic and education communities. The APFE Advisory Board is responsible for monitoring APFE's operations and recommending policies and procedures that will ensure effective and fiscally sound programs and operations, while also providing leadership, advice, resources, and direction to the APFE staff and volunteers. APFE's mission is to enhance and improve the quality of education for students in the Atlanta Public School System by establishing and maintaining high caliber and creative partnerships between individual schools and Atlanta-area business, nonprofit, civic, higher education, religious, social, and professional communities. It is the goal of APFE to maintain a program that is continuously responsive and committed to the needs of both the schools and its business partners. In an APFE partnership, an APS School and its community/corporate partner collaborate to achieve mutually agreed-upon goals and objectives. APFE partnerships match partner-provided resources to identified needs of the school system or an individual school, based primarily on the system or school achievement plan. The school system or individual school may also provide needed resources to the community/corporate partner, based on the organization's mission, goals and objectives. Opportunities exist for partnerships at the elementary, middle and high school levels, as well as with specific school programs, individual grades or classes, and system-wide programs. This work is also accomplished by hosting the following events: Cluster Program In an effort to prepare for effective charter system implementation, APS underwent an innovative cluster re-organization and strategic planning initiative in which each cluster developed a vision for reform and signature learning model. APS received generous support from several local funders for consultant services to carry out this strategy development process. Consultants worked with a cluster planning team comprised of principals and community representatives on the design of cluster plans that will guide the critical academic and strategic direction for students within each cluster and will inform the FY2016-2017 Budget. Capacity Building Through the Atlanta Partners for Education at the Metro Atlanta Chamber, Atlanta Public Schools launched a Capacity Building Campaign in the fall of 2015. The Campaign concluded in December of 2016 and raised funds for three strategic initiatives: 1)support for the Atlanta College and Career Academy, 2)culture transformation consulting services from Matthews Consulting Group and 3)Communication services from Kingdom Quality Communications. Back to School Bash This event helps Atlanta Public Schools (APS) families prepare for the upcoming school year. The Bash is a one-stop shop for all incoming and returning APS students and their families to learn about everything students will need for the first day of school. The event offers health screenings, on-site enrollment and registration, APS programs and services, community and afterschool resources, fun activities for children, and a free backpack stuffed with school supplies. Day One.Be There A critical citywide readiness and attendance campaign to ensure students are ready for the first day of school. All sponsorship will go toward important communication materials and resources sent out to students and families to ensure they are ready for the first day of school. State of the District Address The annual State of the District address is the premiere opportunity for APS Superintendent Dr. Meria J. Carstarphen to publicly comment on the strategic direction of the school district. This event is a cornerstone moment for the superintendent to set the tone for the direction of APS and keep the community informed of its progress. Whole Child Development Fund A new pool of resources created for 2016 geared at enhancing APS work to educate the whole child, and provide students with experiential learning opportunities to supplement teaching and learning in all subject areas. Expenditures may include field trips, cultural experiences, and meeting the basic needs of students, academically, as well as socially and emotionally. 2016 APyeS! Awards The APyeS! Awards will celebrate excellence by recognizing the districts finest employees. In addition to Teacher of the Year, many others who inspire the hope of students will be recognized including principals, student support staff, and partners.
