In what we hope marks progress in Indigenous institutional capacity, almost 32 percent of participants represented Indigenous-led organizations from more than 30 countries. In May and June 2015 IFIP strengthened its membership base and cultivated potential members through two regional donor meetings. The Northwest Regional Meeting brought 60 funders and Indigenous leaders together to focus on pathways to Indigenous philanthropy and global collaboration for advancing Indigenous rights. The Northeast Regional Meeting in Boston introduced 50 members of the affinity group, New England International Donors and Funders for LGBTQ issues to IFIP members, Indigenous leaders at the forefront of climate change adaptation, disability and transgendered peoples. IFIP worked with Cultural Survival for a feature on the event in their quarterly magazine. IFIP and the Foundation Centers prestigious publications arm, GrantCraft, developed the first-ever report on Indigenous philanthropy, Supporting Indigenous Peoples: Strategies for Support. The product of more than 30 interviews with top donors who support Indigenous communities, including the Ford Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation and American Jewish World Service, the report provides the 30-thousand strong GrantCraft readership with reasons to consider Indigenous philanthropy, as well as practical tips from those in the field. Unlike most Foundation Center reports, this guide included the voices of grantees and philanthropies headed by Indigenous peoples themselves, who could offer the most exemplary models of how to structure funding relationships based on the Four Rs of Indigenous Philanthropy (Respect, Reciprocity, Relationships and Responsibility.) The most comprehensive IFIP donor guide to date, the collaboration with GrantCraft brought Indigenous philanthropy to a larger, more influential sphere of grantmakers.
