The symposium is designed for a general audience and it gives members of the general public a chance to meet and discuss a contemporary topic with scholars, experts and other audience members. This year's topic was entitled, "Pulitzer Prize Edition," and it featured Pulitzer Prize winning journalists and authors discussing their work. The one-day symposium attracted an audience of approximately 300 people. 201732 186772 0 HUMANITIES PROJECT GRANTS: Grants were awarded to non-profit organizations in order to support public humanities projects (such as history, language, literature, philosophy, ethics, jurisprudence, archaeology, comparative religion, art history & criticism, ethnic studies, social sciences, etc.). The NDHC has two types of grants available for humanities projects: quick grants ($1,500 or less) and large grants (greater than $1,500). The NDHC awarded 23 quick grants and 21 large grants (a total of 44 grants). 57191 0 0 ON SECOND THOUGHT MAGAZINE: The purpose of the "On Second Thought" magazine is to give the readers a humanities perspective on current issues in an entertaining and highly readable format. The NDHC published two issues during the year: the "New Americans" issue and the "Pulitzer Prize Winners" issue. All grant applicants are required to submit a written application describing the proposed project in detail and a budget which conforms to NDHC guidelines. Successful applicants sign a written grant agreement and submit program reports and a final expenditure report at the end of the project. Grantees which are subject to the federal audit requirements found in the OMB Uniform Administrative Requirements, Cost Principles, and Audit Requirements for Federal Awards are required to report any findings which are relevant to the expenditure of NDHC grant funds. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11b The form 990 and related schedules were prepared by the Associate Director and reviewed by the Executive Director. The NDHC Board of Directors received an electronic copy of the form 990 and related schedules for their review before the return was filed with the IRS. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12c At each meeting of the NDHC Board of Directors, actual and potential conflicts of interest are discussed and ruled on by the Chair before discussions and voting on grant applications or potential projects take place. Any board members deemed to have to have a conflict of interest are excused from the meeting during the discussion and abstain from voting on the relevant grant application or project. The Chair also monitors the outside activities of the Executive Director to ensure that no actual or potential conflicts of interest exist. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 15 The compensation of the Executive Director and the Associate Director are reviewed annually and any adjustments are approved by the NDHC Board of Directors. The NDHC Executive Committee conducts annual performance reviews and takes into consideration the comparable salary survey data prepared by the Federation of State Humanities Councils. All NDHC board actions related to compensation are recorded in the board meeting minutes. The most recent performance review and compensation adjustments took place at the October, 2016, NDHC Board of Directors meeting. Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19 Copies of the NDHC audited financial statements are available to the members of the general public upon request. Copies of the governing documents (articles of incorporation, bylaws, policies, etc.) are also available to members of the general public upon request. Form 990, Part IX, Line 11g SCHOLAR HONORARIUMS: Fees paid to authors, historians, writers and humanities professionals for research, articles, coordination and humanities presentations.
