Each year, DNS offers over 400 environmental science, natural history, agriculture, and cultural history hands-on programs for all ages. Educational programs, summer camps, and events are offered at Ashland Nature Center, Coverdale Farm, Abbott's Mill Nature Center, DuPont Environmental Education Center, and additional sites.These programs reach over 52,500 people annually including students, adults, senior citizens, teachers and professionals. In addition, over 40,000 people visit our sites for hiking, birding, nature study and passive education exhibits. These programs connect people to nature from first-time experiences to deeper engagement that foster life-long memories and environmental responsibility. 530138 Preservation & Conservation:The Land Preservation Program focuses on the preservation of ecologically significant natural areas and protection of Delaware's biodiversity. Currently, the Nature Society holds conservation easements and deed restrictions totaling approximately 500 acres. DNS also provides leadership for the preservation of significant natural and agricultural areas throughout the State of Delaware.The Watershed Stewardship Program is comprised of watershed education, technical monitoring, and Certified Wildlife Habitats. Watershed Education is offered to individuals and groups about stream ecology and promotes people's roles in protecting water quality. Technical Water Quality Monitoring is a nationally recognized use of citizen science data by the State and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to monitor watershed health. Technical Monitoring data is currently being collected at 38 sites. The Certified Wildlife Habitat program provides certification for properties that provide healthy habitats for wildlife including food, water, shelter and nesting spaces. To date, more than 400 properties have been certified, ranging from urban to suburban across all three Delaware counties. The Advocacy Program monitors environmental issues with specific focus on wildlife, wetlands, water quality, open space preservation, climate change and sustainable energy. DNS works with legislators on policy and takes positions and acts on federal, state, and local issues affecting the quality of our environment. The Advocacy Program builds grassroots support for issues and helps create and facilitate networks among community, industry and government groups for solutions to environmental problems. 661392 Land & Biodiversity Management:The Delaware Nature Society manages over 1,900 acres of land in Delaware and southeast Pennsylvania. Management goals include the protection and enhancement of natural biodiversity, utilization of the land for environmental education and promotion of responsible environmental stewardship. Surveys and monitoring of flora and fauna are conducted on all properties and the conservation of rare and / or uncommon fauna and flora and their habitats is a high management priority. Invasive alien plant control projects are ongoing on all sites and a Whitetail Deer management strategy has been developed and implemented. Restoration of meadow and woodland areas is a high priority. The full Board is given an opportunity to review the return before it is filed. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 12c Each Director must complete a Conflict of Interest Policy Disclosure Statement upon his/her election to the Board and any reelection thereafter. Board members are required to acknowledge a potential conflict to the Board prior to entering into a transaction with the Society. The minutes of the Board meeting at which a disclosure of conflict is made shall reflect the occurrence and the outcome. The Executive Director monitors contracts and vendor payments for potential conflicts of interest and informs the President of the Board. The President then brings the potential conflict to the Board for discussion when deemed possibly material. Form 990, Part VI, Section B, line 15 The Personnel Committee of the Board of Directors oversees a national salary survey every three years. The Committee also gathers local salary data to help establish current market values for the Society's salaried positions. The collected survey data supports a salary structure that aligns every position within a salary range. The Personnel Committee reviews all salary rates including the Executive Director and Associate Directors and then approves the rates of pay prior to budget approval for the next fiscal year. Form 990, Part VI, Section C, line 19 Delaware Nature Society provides access to the Annual Report on its website which includes summaries of the financial report and donor recognitions. Copies of this 990 report, annual audit and governing documents are available upon request and are routinely included in grant and funding requests. Form 990, Part XI, Line 2c: The Society has an Audit Committee that assumes responsibility for oversight of the financial statement audit and the selection of the independent auditors. Form 990, Part VI, Line 14: Written Document Retention and Destruction Policy While the Society does not have a comprehensive document retention and destruction policy for the Organization as a whole, it does have guidelines in place to govern certain categories of document preservation. The Board's position on these policies is currently under review.
