<Desc>In 2016, Trust for America's Health (TFAH) continued to work to improve the nation's commitment to an adequately resourced 21st Century prevention and public health system. Every project that TFAH undertook, from infectious diseases, to HIV/AIDS prevention, clean air, and childhood obesity, included specific recommendations for how to enhance, modernize, and hold accountable federal, state, and local public health departments. TFAH promoted public health policies that affect the entire nation, with an emphasis on how public health programs can provide protection and promote healthy communities regardless of geography.TFAH is committed to building healthier, more resilient communities to address the nation's racial, ethnic, geographic, and economic disparities. Further, a key goal is to build sustainable, scalable changes that address common risk factors for chronic disease and behavioral health needs. TFAHs work towards improving the nation's public health capacity included non-partisan research and analysis, publication of science-based reports, outreach and educational activities, and the convening of subject matter experts about the need for a robust, effective public health system that is prepared to respond to a wide range of public health emergencies. At the core of TFAHs work is its efforts to develop and cultivate partnerships and build consensus. In this role, TFAH successfully convened public health experts on a variety of public health topics, including: opportunities for collaboration between health and education; identification of policies to integrate public health and community prevention into the reforming health care system; substance misuse; and the development of sustainable financing for population health.Among TFAHs achievements in 2016:TFAH released its quadrennial Blueprint for a Healthier America 2016: Policy Priorities for the next Administration and Congress. The Blueprint highlights leading evidence-based strategies for improving health, and models to help bring them to scale across the country. They fall under the following categories: Supporting Better Health in Every Community; Modernizing the Public Health System to Be Prepared for Emergencies; and Incentivizing Health Care vs. Sick Care. The report also included a set of policy recommendations to address 14 priority health problems that require urgent action, including Achieving Health Equity; Stopping the Prescription Painkiller and Heroin Epidemics; Renewing Efforts to Prevent Obesity; Diabetes and Tobacco Use; and Stopping Superbugs and Antibiotic Resistance.TFAH continued to engage diverse multi-sector stakeholders within our population health efforts including hospitals, health plans, government agencies, health management companies, housing, education, hunger organizations and employers. For example, TFAH worked to explore the intersection of housing and healthcare; worked with health plans, hospitals and healthcare systems to promote innovative population health models, practices and policy opportunities; and hosted several meetings linking population health with initiatives or opportunities within the healthcare sectors. Co-launched, with the Department of Education and Health and Human Service and Healthy Schools Campaign, the Healthy Students, Promising Futures Learning Collaborative. Thirteen state teams, composed of representative from state Medicaid agencies and both state- and district-level education personnel gathered with 15 national partner organizations and federal officials to discuss current federal and state policy levers affecting school-based Medicaid services, explore different models for delivering school-based health services and advance their plans for increasing the provision of health services in schools. Co-convened, under the auspices of the National Collaborative on Education and Health, a Mental Health Promotion to Advance the Conditions for Learning in Early Child Care and Education Working Group that explored the potential of various policy opportunities to promote mental health and social-emotional learning in schools and early care and education and develop policy recommendations. Published and disseminated a series of reports:Ready or Not? 2016 : Protecting the Public from Diseases, Disasters, and Bioterrorism - The report found that the nation is often caught off guard when a new threat arises, which then requires diverting attention and resources away from other priorities. The report also contains state-by-state health preparedness scores based on 10 key indicators.Blueprint for a Healthier America 2016: Policy Priorities for the Next Administration and Congress - TFAH presents key strategies for improving the health of Americans, and calls for a new approach to health by prioritizing improving health and addressing major epidemics in the United States.Special Issue Brief: Obesity Rates Among WIC Children Provides and analysis and discussion of obesity rates among young children enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children. The State of Obesity 2016: Better Policies for a Healthier America - The 13th annual report produced by TFAH and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation marks the first time in the past decade that any states have experienced decreases. The report includes annual rates and rankings of adult obesity and obesity rate trends by ethnicity, region, age, gender, education and income.Investing in Americas Health: A State-by-State Look at Public Health Funding and Key Health Facts - Trust for Americas Health examines public health funding and key health facts in states around the country.Furthering the Adaptation and Implementation of LGBTQ-Inclusive Sexuality Education Summarizes the deliberations of a one-day consultation to consider strategies to advance the adaptation and implementation of school-based, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning (LGBTQ)-inclusive sexuality education.</Desc>
