Through weekly lessons, we offer children language to talk about healthful foods and engage them in the preparation of whole grains, fruit and vegetables and plant proteins. The one-hour classes are hands-on and interactive, and incorporate ecology, geography, and literacy. We reached 1,150 children with the 24-week whole-food based curriculum, and an additional 1,500 children with garden-based summer education. We also partner with program hosts to create on-site food-production gardens to be used for outdoor education. 239838 70380 Cooking Matters: Cooking Matters is a comprehensive food and nutrition education program designed to decrease hunger and prevent obesity among low-income parents and their children. Cooking Matters emplowers participants to cook affordable, healthful meals for themselves and their families through lessons that teach culinary skills, nutrition, hands-on meal preparation, and food shopping/budgeting. In 2016, Local Matters reaching 425 graduates with the six-week series and an additional 2,025 participants with our Cooking Matters at the Store Tours and Pantry demonstrations. 176164 66718 Food Planning and Community Engagement: Local Matters has a long history of community planning related to food resources and equitable access to healthful foods. Local Matters served as the lead non-profit with the Columbus Department of Health and Franklin County Department of Development in the creation of the Columbus-Franklin County Local Food Action Plan, adopted in 2016.
