(SALA) was able to provide direct civil legalassistance to meet the fundamental human needs of more than 16,221 low incomeindividuals and families in 7,475 cases and matters.Services included safety and protection for children and women who arevictimized by domestic violence; preservation of shelter for those wrongfully evicted or facing foreclosure from their homes; access to food stamps for people who were in need of food security; access to long-term health care for those denied services; a means to survive for disabled persons who are unable to obtain government benefits; access to debtor relief for the protection of income and property and a means to survive for disabled persons who are unable to obtain benefits from the Social Security Administration.The impact of services provided resulted in recovery of $4,892,926 in homessaved, lump sum benefits and money judgments obtained; $430,280 in annual monthlyawards; and avoided 1,006,199 in garnishments, court judgments and debts. For every $1 invested in Southern Arizona Legal Aid, Inc., $7.92 of actual value is returned to the community.Out of the total cases handled by SALA, 1,895 were handled by volunteer lawyersand law students participating in SALAs Volunteer Lawyers Program. The volunteerattorneys and students donated 5,416 hours of free civil legal services valued at$1,083,200.In addition, SALA raised community awareness of individual legal rights andresponsibilities by teaching clients how to use the law and legal system to prevent legal problems and self-help in accessing the courts. The information is obtained from salary surveys conducted by the Economic Research Institutes Non-profit Salary Survey Assessor, the Legal Services Corporations annual salary reports, Form 990 information for similar positions in other legal services programs and other non-profits, and other salary surveys which may be conducted by other legal services organizations and non-profits. The deliberations and decisions regarding compensation are recorded in the Board minutes and preserved as employment related records under SALAs Document Retention and Destruction Policy.
