<Desc>Sustainability ProgramsBuilding Projects- Provided cement floors for a new primary school in Bondo, Kenya. Installed a playground at primary school in Kisumu, Kenya.- Completed a deep-water borehole in Kimana, Kenya for Lenkai Christian School for sustainability projects.- Built 9 chicken coops for 250 widows caring for over 600 children.- Purchased a building and property for the Hope Beyond Transitional Center, a home for counseling and trauma therapy for abused girls. It consists of a 5-acre fenced property with a home, well, agricultural and animals. We raised $65,000 for this project.Income Generating Projects- Borehole - Completed the borehole which allows for the selling of water to the community. In addition, funds previously spent on purchasing water are now redirected to other areas of need given the water from the well. - Kitchen/Bakery - produces baked goods for sale to the community and also provides the availability of baked food to the families at the school. Launched a lunch program for 250 children each day. - Agriculture - crops are being grown all year round thanks to a consistent water source via the borehole, allowing the school to be self-sufficient in providing food for over 250 children at the school and rescue center. Additional crops can now be sold to the community, when before they relied on the rains and many seasons the crops failed. The borehole now makes Lenkai Christian School a sought after source of clean water and reliable nutritious food.- Chicken coops - raised funds for a chicken coop project impacting 250 widows caring for over 600 children. Income is made by selling the eggs and chickens to the community. Eggs will also provide much needed nutritious food for the children they care for. Jobs were also created by this initiative. Education Projects- Supported salaries for 15 teachers. - Covered student labs and exams fees.- Lead collaborative teacher trainings which were held twice a year by US teachers to enrich, equip, and encourage Kenyan teachers.- Educational Sponsorships - Just One Africa is working with our partners to identify the children with the greatest need of support and match them with sponsors who can help with education, medical, housing, and food costs. This creates an opportunity for individuals and families to learn about the world around them and have meaningful avenues to care for others. Provided support for approximately 36 children in Bondo and 6 in Kimana. - Donated high quality educational materials given by US schools were used to help start a school in the Rift Valley. - Provided desks and chairs for a number of school classrooms.- Partnered with and sponsored 10 Kenyan nationals to attend a Yobel Entrepreneurial Business Training in Nairobi.Clean Water Program- In 2016 we provided 1100 filters impacting over 27,500 people. The filters were distributed in the following areas: Kisumu, Bondo, Kimana, and the Rift Valley.- Water Filter Follow-up Program - Implemented a follow up program in Western and Southern Kenya. This important process allows us to analyze the water filter data to carefully monitor our success rates and make any adjustments in the areas in which we serve. We are currently collecting the data using a paper based system and entering it into spreadsheets, then it is uploaded and shared in a cloud based system which is accessible anywhere in the world. The data shows children are missing 96% fewer days in class and families are spending 92% less money on medical. That is amazing!- WASH - Water and Sanitation Hygiene training has been provided to over 2000 people.- Recycled Paper Bead Program - This continues to thrive and offers significant support to our Clean Water Program. It provides sustainable income to the Masai women from whom we purchase the beads. The program also provides volunteer opportunities for young people, corporate team building events, and others as they help us to string the beads into bracelets. There are now many established Just One Africa clubs in our local schools. During these meetings we are able to share the Just One Africa vision, as well as educate young people about the needs and challenges in the areas in which we serve.Vulnerable Children Monthly Support- Salem Orphanage - 2016 Total $24,000 (Operations, Education and Food)- Lenkai Christian School - 2016 Total $12,000 (Rescue Center Support)Staff- Hired a full time Director of Operations in January. - Hired a part-time person to help manage the volunteer projects.- Added a new board member in October.Volunteers- Administrative - 1 regular part time volunteer- Schools and Clubs - We worked with over 15 local elementary, middle, and high schools on a regular basis to string our recycled paper beads. This has allowed us to share our story and serve with over 3000 students locally. - Events - Just One Africa has participated in dozens of local community events, sharing our story and selling our products that help fund our Clean Water and Sustainability Programs.- U.S. Intern - We had an intern from Western Carolina University who was majoring in Communications. She created various marketing materials, including logos, social media campaigns and print pieces. She created a complete sponsorship packet which will be given to every person who sponsors a child through Just One Africa.- A winter intern from Samford University assisted Just One Africa for six weeks.- Kenya Interns - We had 3 students from Duke University intern with our partners in Southern Kenya for 10 weeks. They were part of a program called Duke Engage, which funded their trip. They taught in the school, worked with the Rescue Center children and participated in our water filter follow-up program.- We had well over 75 volunteers, outside of students, who volunteered hundreds of hours to help Just One Africa with our service projects, product development, educational school programs, fundraisers, etc. Just One Africa partners with local leaders to create sustainable solutions for vulnerable children and the clean water crisis. These realities made possible by Just One Africa donors have provided many opportunities for our amazing partners in Kenya. They can now move more securely towards providing for the needs of the vulnerable children they care for. Our partners work diligently running schools, an orphanage, and a rescue center. We empower them with viable avenues to build even stronger foundations for the programs they have implemented in their own communities, which is what Just One Africa is all about!</Desc>
