The applications included three audio recordings, resume, headshot, and biographical information. Judges for the preliminary round selected semifinalists based on the applicants' recordings. The semifinalists sang live in front of the panel of guest judges who made decisions without input from MDLO personnel. Singers were judged based upon vocal abilities including language, timbre, style, individualism, artistry in general, and ability to make a major career as an opera singer. The finalists sang live in front of an orchestra, audience, and judging panel. The judges made their decisions without the input of MDLO personnel.
