Science and research:43 wetland sites were monitored as part of the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Wetland Assessment to better determine the health of wetlands protecting our coastal communities of which 30 were random assessments, 11 were long term monitoring stations with 6+ years of data and 2 sites were studied for blue carbon inventories. 11 existing living shorelines at 5 sites between DE and NJ were monitored and maintained, and a new hybrid living shoreline, including 3 bio-based living shoreline treatments behind an array of oyster castle breakwaters, was installed in the mouth of the Nantuxent River. These monitoring data are informing the developmental trajectories and ability of different living shoreline types to meet a variety of goals for shoreline protection and ecological enhancement.4 living shorelines were augmented with a variety of ribbed mussel recruitment devices to test new ways to enhance shellfish populations in living shorelines.2 new living shorelines in the urban freshwater portion of the tidal Delaware River in Camden, NJ are in the design planning phase. The urban living shorelines are being designed to incorporate poulations of freshwater mussels for water quality benefits.750 freshwater mussels were tagged, adding to the 1,190 already tagged for monitoring since 2011 to better understand the water filtering services they provide in local creeks and streams. 78 volunteer fresh water mussel surveys have been completed to identify streams where mussels can still be found.Education and outreach:Earth Day in Wilmington, DE was planned and hosted to educate attendees about living an eco-friendly lifestyle and Coast Day at Penn's Landing was hosted to give attendees a first-hand experience on the water. 1,260 students participated in the Green Cities Clean Waters art contest held with Philadelphia Water with winning art being used as storm drain labels to educate the public. 26 teachers attended accredited summer workshops to enrich their science curriculum.
