General explanation attachment Part I Line 1 Organizations Mission:The mission of the Womens Foundation of Southern Arizona is: we collaborate to achieve social, political and economic change that empowers women and girls. The Foundation fulfills this mission using a community-based process to grant funds to array of programs in Southern Arizona that benefit women and girls and by providing innovative research, advocacy and programs. Part III line 4a - Statement of Program Accomplishments:The Foundation fulfills its mission through research, advocacy and grantmaking to support an array of organizations in Southern Arizona (Pima, Cochise & Santa Cruz Counties) that create change that empowers women and girls; by providing innovative programs to increase young womens philanthropy and leadership; by advocating publicly for issues affecting women and girls; and by conducting research on issues affecting women and girls in Southern Arizona. In the spring of 2016, we awarded $327,200 through our competitive annual grant round to 16 organizations that promote womens economic empowerment using a variety of strategies: Education, skills development, high school completion, job training, asset development, child-care services and advocacy, health-care services, affordable housing, domestic violence services and literacy. Additionally, we awarded 3 multi-year grants. Assuming adequate yearly progress toward goals, each organization receives a $25,000 grant, renewable for 2 more years. Two of these grants focus on economic self-sufficiency. One provides micro-loans and business training to women entrepreneurs; the other provides job training and English language skills to under-served refugee and immigrant women. The third is a collaboration between the Womens Foundation and University of Arizona Health Sciences at address unmet behavioral health care needs for uninsured women in Santa Cruz County. Our award-winning Unidas program trained 38 young Tucson women on social justice issues, philanthropy, leadership and grantmaking. Through Unidas, high school girls designed and implemented a grants process, allocating $10,000 to 2 organizations that challenge traditional gender roles and expectations, challenge gender and sexual violence, and encourage girls and womens empowerment and leadership.Through our donor-advised fund program, several donors recommended over $63,000 in grants to a variety of causes, including educational films on sexual assault, refugee services and research on diversity and inclusion in the media. In partnership with the Arizona Womens Foundation, we published a research study in 2015-2016 addressing economic development issues in Arizona and the impact of public policy decisions on women and children.
