Recognizing the gap in knowledge on how gender inequality and gender norms further violent extremism, WIIS facilitated a study that focused on and advance understanding of: 1) The role of women in terrorist and violent extremist organizations, including the gendered dimensions of radicalization; 2) The relationship between gender inequality and the use of violence by extremist groups, including the use of sexual and gender based violence; 3) The role and capacity of womens organizations to prevent and counter violent extremism. Part III Statement of Program Service Accomplishments Part 4b Biennial Independent Assessment on the Action Plan for the implementation of the NATO/EAPC Policy on Women, Peace and Security The objective of the independent assessment was to assess those actions defined in the Action Plan where NATO International Staff and NATO Military Staff are the implementing entities. In order to do this WIIS designed a simple scorecard using the actions and indicators mentioned in the Action Plan. WIIS provided recommendations to improve the action plan and make it an actionable guiding tool for advancing the WPSs responsibilities. The outcome of this assessment included: recommendations; defined responsible entities; improved indicators; and SMART targets. Part III Statement of Program Service Accomplishments Part 4a Women, Peace and Security: Strengthening Engagement between the U.S. Government and U.S. Civil Society The U.S. Civil Society Working Group (CSWG) on Women, Peace, and Security convened its prestigious group of organizations and experts to engage directly with key policy makers and governmental institutions to ensure the next administrations commitment to and implementation of the U.S. National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security. In addition, the U.S. CSWG reached out to those in the traditional security community a community that has hitherto not been engaged on the WPS agenda and the U.S. NAP.The work consisted of thematic and country specific briefs highlighting critical gendered aspects; meetings and roundtables to inform and advise senior officials and members of the security think tank community; and the development of and advocacy for a clear first 100 days plan of action to ensure the next administration establishes a high standard of practice on the WPS agenda, and can legitimately act as a global leader in international fora.
