Critical care services are supplied directly to patients at emergency scenes in support of local EMS and public safety organizations and within hospital emergency department and critical care units in support of physicians caring for critically ill or injured patients requiring emergent resuscitation, stabilization, and transportation for specialty services at major medical centers throughout Maine and the Northeast. LOM services are provided regardless of insurance status or ability to pay for care. LifeFlight provided direct scene responses to 111 communities in Maine and 6 communities in New Hampshire. Patients originated from 27 states in the US, 5 Canadian Provinces, and 2 foreign countries (Thailand and the UK). Patients were transported to 40 receiving hospitals in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. LifeFlight is financially supported by care to patients with funding from the LifeFlight Foundation to support aviation infrastructure, specialized medical equipment, aircraft, and outreach education. LOM provides care to critically ill and injured patients without regard to the ability to pay for care or insurance status. In FY2016 LOM incurred costs to care for patients unable to pay of $425,155 for Charity Care and $1,257,014 in bad debt. Contractual allowances with third party payors including reductions in revenue for Medicare and MaineCare beneficiaries reduced revenue by $7,816,093. In addition to providing care to critically ill and injured patients, during FY16 LOM supported a private-public aviation infrastructure with the State of Maine and the Federal Aviation Administration including:- The maintenance support and commissioning for 15 automated weather observation systems located at rural airports and hospitals in Vinalhaven, Belfast, Machias, Princeton, Fort Kent, Jackman, Greenville, Carrabassett, Skowhegan, Farmington, Rumford, Bethel, Eastport, and Brunswick, Bridgton, and Lewiston;- The installation of new automated weather stations on Matinicus and Monhegan Islands;- Technical and consulting support for new hospital helipads at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital and Maine Medical Center in Portland- The maintenance of 39 helicopter instrument flight approach and departure procedures at hospitals, communities, islands, and rural airports. LifeFlight also runs a remote access project with over 120 remote access points in conjunction with the Maine Department of Conservation, the Maine Emergency Management Agency, Maine Fire Chiefs Association, Homeland Security, public safety agencies, and numerous private landowners, woodland and forest product companies as well as outdoor recreational organizations. During FY16, LifeFlight continued to provide an on-line database of over 600 approved landing sites with access granted to all of the 911 Public Safety Regional Communication Centers for coordination of emergency response. 208308 Supporting the chain of survival and with assistance from the LifeFlight Foundation, LOM provides physicians and clinical staff with continuing medical education. In FY2016, LifeFlight provided 40 programs for 437 physicians, critical care nurses and paramedics, support personnel in the provision of HPS programs, nurse practitioners/PAs, emergency department and ICU RNs, respiratory therapists, paramedics, and emergency medical technicians.
