This is our first systematic attempt at institutionalizing a social-emotional learning program. The therapy is targeted toward the urban student whose depression takes the form of anger and acting out. Research has shown that this is one of the top issues within urban schools, not only does this anger keep the individual student from being successful, but due to the fact this depression is expressed by students acting out, this behavior keeps entire classes of students from learning. There is a mistaken belief that schools can control this type of depression with traditional social workers and talk therapy. ART allows the professional (and lay professional) to work with entire groups of students on how to redirect this anger into more socially acceptable activities that help the student grow.2.Completing our charter renewal process.
