<Desc>Musical Performances - See Schedule OIn 2016, Caramoor presented a total of 57 stand-alone musical performances and day-long, multi-set festivals to audience members in venues throughout our campus, including the 1,700+ seat Venetian Theater, the 500-seat Spanish Courtyard, the 160-seat Music Room of the historic Rosen House, the Sunken Garden, Tapestry Hedge, Picnic Lawn, and Friends' Field. While maintaining our commitment to the core classical repertoire, including symphonic, opera, and chamber music, we also presented a wide array of other genres, including jazz, American Songbook, and American roots music, as well as programs designed for families with young children. The 71st annual Summer Music Festival, which ran from June 18 to August 7 and included 36 concerts and multi-set day festivals, was the highlight of our musical offerings. It opened with a performance by Tony Award-winning Kelli O'Hara, conductor and pianist Rob Fisher, and the Orchestra of St. Luke's, in residence at Caramoor since 1979.With an ongoing commitment to classical music, we presented a broad range of performances during the 2016 Summer Music Season. Pianist Jonathan Biss, who began his relationship with Caramoor as a young artist participating in the Evnin Rising Stars mentoring program in 1998, returned to perform and help shape programming as our 2016 Artist-in-Residence. Biss' performances included two piano concerti featuring the New York debut of the first installment of his Beethoven/5 project with Joshua Weilerstein conducting and the Orchestra of St. Luke's; a chamber performance with Miriam Fried, Hsin-Yun Huang, and Marcy Rosen; and an all-Beethoven recital.Additional returning artists included David Finckel and Wu Han, co-artistic Directors of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center; the Emerson String Quartet's Philip Setzer; former Guarneri Quartet cellist Peter Wiley; guitarist Meng Su; and the Grammy Award-winning Pacifica Quartet, a former Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence at Caramoor. This extended musical family also took on new members, with debuts from the celebrated Danish String Quartet and MacArthur "genius grant"-winning pianist Jeremy Denk. Our 2016 Bel Canto at Caramoor program included Rossini's Aureliano in Palmira and Beethoven's only opera, Fidelio. Will Crutchfield, Director of Opera, conducted the North American debut of his critical edition of Aureliano in Palmira, which he first presented at the Rossini Festival in Italy in 2014. Pablo Heras-Casado was the program's first guest conductor as he led Fidelio. This was alsohis first time conducting opera at Caramoor and conducting an opera with the Orchestra of St. Luke's, building on his recent successes at the Metropolitan Opera. Both operas included professional opera singers, emerging singers from the Bel Canto Young Artists program, and the Orchestra of St. Luke's. The 2016 Bel Canto Young Artists also showcased their talents in two vocal recitals, The Intimate Rossini: Ensembles & Choruses and Beethoven in Song. The Jazz Festival at Caramoor was reimagined in 2015 through a new artistic partnership between Caramoor and Jazz at Lincoln Center. In 2016, this collaboration presented an all-day festival with the Chick Corea Trio headlining. In addition, there were performances by Cecile McLorin Salvant and The Aaron Diehl Trio during the summer season. The sixth annual American Roots Music Festival was an all-day presentation of bluegrass, folk, and country music with artists Hurray for the Riff Raff, John Fullbright, Sara Watkins, The Lowest Pair, Man About a Horse, and many more. The day-long event included multiple sets by each artist throughout Caramoor's grounds, activities for children, and the Social Music Hour Workshop. The daytime attendance set records for this event. The Dancing at Dusk series is the cornerstone of our family music programming. In 2016 the series included four events which explored the music and dance traditions of Pacific Rim locales, including Tahiti, Hawaii, Colombia, the Philippines, and China. The goal of this series is to introduce children, from toddlers to pre-teens, to a wide range of music genres in a welcoming and accessible manner. We also presented our family-friendly July 4th celebration, Pops, Patriots, and Fireworks, featuring a concert with artists Westchester Symphonic Winds and Ryan Silverman, followed by a fireworks display.Caramoor presents chamber music-both classical and American Roots-as well as talks and lectures in the spring and fall in the intimate 160-seat Music Room of its historic Rosen House. Programs in spring 2016 included a presentation in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center of the Anat Cohen Quartet; we also presented Edward Arron & Friends, an outgrowth of the Evnin Rising Stars program; The Small Glories with Joe Crookston; the Aizuri Quartet, the 2015-2016 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence; and a lecture entitled "The Mind and Music of Scott Joplin" by Dr. Richard Kogan. In fall 2016 we presented the Wednesday Morning Concert series; cellist Alisa Weilerstein performing the complete Bach cello suites; a Roots in the Music Room presentation of David Amram and Silver City Bound; Cyrille Aimee, in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center; two concerts by the 2016 Evnin Rising Stars; a concert by the Argus Quartet, Caramoor's 2016-2017 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence; a performance by Edward Arron & Friends; and a series of Holiday Tea Musicales. In an effort to present excellent and diverse music to a wider audience, Caramoor continued to collaborate with two organizations: Waveny and the Katonah Museum of Art. Caramoor@KMA is a collaboration between two of the region's cultural resources, with Caramoor curating a series of performances by young and mid-career artists at KMA's outdoor Sculpture Garden. 2016 activities included performances by Cole Quest and the City Pickers, the Jake Hertzog Band, and Ethos Percussion Group. Caramoor also hosted a chamber music concert at the Carriage Barn at Waveny Park in New Canaan, CT, formerly home of the Waveny Chamber Music Society. On March 29 we presented the Aizuri Quartet, our 2015-2016 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence.</Desc>

<Desc>Mentoring - See Schedule OThe development of emerging artists is central to Caramoor's mission and woven into much of our programming. Through our five mentoring programs, we identify, train, and promote the next generation of vocal and instrumental artists. In 2016, nearly 60 young musicians participated. Through these programs, we have worked with some of the finest musicians of the next generation and helped them cross the threshold from their student years into the early stages of their professional careers. For many of these artists, this is the beginning of a longstanding relationship with Caramoor, as they return throughout their careers to perform for our audiences.Evnin Rising StarsFor over two decades there has been an institutional focus on training instrumental artists. Pianist, conductor, and composer Andre Previn established the mentoring program now known as the Evnin Rising Stars at Caramoor in 1992; as his tenure at Caramoor concluded, conductor Peter Oundjian took on artistic leadership of the program. Since 2008 violinist Pamela Frank has acted as Artistic Director for the Evnin Rising Stars. Each fall, eight to ten instrumentalists come together with three distinguished artists-past musicians have included Atar Arad, Kim Kashkashian, Ani Kavafian, Marcy Rosen, Ronald Thomas, and Donald Weilerstein, among others-for a week of intensive chamber music rehearsals, coaching, and performances of works from the heart of the chamber music repertoire. At the end of the residency the musicians perform for audiences in the intimate Music Room of the historic Rosen House on Caramoor's campus, giving them valuable exposure and performance experience. The Evnin Rising Stars program has identified and brought 120 promising musicians to Caramoor to train with 30 artist mentors. As the years have passed, alumni of the program have established themselves as artists in the world of classical music performance. In 2016, eight young Rising Stars (Eunice Kim, violin; Paul Huang, violin; In Mo Yang, violin; Haeiji Kim, viola; Sung Jin Lee, viola; Sarah Rommel, cello; and Oliver Herbert, cello) partnered with violinist Pamela Frank, violist Nobuko Imai, and cellist Ralph Kirshbaum in a week-long residency program of coaching and rehearsals. The program culminated in two performances at Caramoor.Edward Arron & FriendsIn 1999 the program now known as Edward Arron & Friends grew out of the great success of Caramoor's Evnin Rising Stars young artist mentoring program. 120 instrumentalists on the cusp of their professional careers have participated in the Evnin Rising Stars in the last 25 years; Edward Arron & Friends serves as a bridge between that opportunity and Caramoor's general music presenting programs. It has thus far enabled 58 young artists to return to Caramoor for a residency week during the Summer Music Festival as well as additional performance opportunities throughout the year. The program is led by cellist Edward Arron, who began his affiliation with Caramoor as a Rising Star, and is now the artistic director of Edward Arron & Friends. Its focus is to foster the intimacy and immediacy of chamber music, cultivate collaborative music-making, and engage audiences in the excitement of musical performance. In 2016, 12 artists (Maria Bachmann, violin; Jennifer Frautschi, violin; Tessa Lark, violin; Jesse Mills, violin; Arnaud Sussmann, violin; Mark Holloway, viola; Hsin-Yun Huang, viola; Max Mandel, viola; Andrew Armstrong, piano; Adam Neiman, piano; Edward Arron, cello; and Alice Yoo, cello) participated and there were three performances during the year.Bel Canto Young ArtistsIn 1998 Will Crutchfield established the Bel Canto Young Artists program. Each year 35 young opera singers are selected to receive rigorous training in bel canto singing and to fill solo performance slots that arise during the Summer Music Festival. Six weeks in length, the program includes daily group classes by Caramoor staff and guests. Members of the program also understudy the principal roles of each summer's operas, participating in full-scale rehearsals that provide them with the invaluable opportunity to test their skills in a complete part. They also gain performance experience and exposure with audiences in pre-opera recital concerts. In 2016, 35 young opera singers took part in this program. Activities included a six-week residency, two stand-alone chamber recitals, pre-opera recitals, and two main-stage concert operas.Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-ResidenceIn 1999, with generous underwriting support from The Ernst C. Stiefel Foundation, Caramoor established a residency program for young chamber ensembles. In performing at Caramoor throughout the year, the quartet gains recognition and performance experience. In turn, the quartet hones their mentoring skills with didactic performances and workshops for approximately 1,000 area schoolchildren who attend as part of the Student Strings arts-in-education program. The quartet also partners with a young composer on a new commission which is premiered during Caramoor's Summer Music Festival. In spring and summer 2016, the Aizuri Quartet concluded its residency with three performances (including the world premiere of a Caramoor commission) and 10 days of outreach in local schools. In fall 2016, the Argus Quartet, the 2016-2017 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence, began their residency with 10 days of outreach and a concert.Schwab Vocal Rising StarsThe Schwab Vocal Rising Stars, established in 2009 and under the artistic leadership of the New York Festival of Song's Steven Blier and Michael Barrett, is a program for young vocal artists. The initiative focuses on singing outside the realm of opera, including the song recital and vocal chamber music. The week-long residency offers intensive daily coaching, rehearsals, and workshops with mentors and leaders in the field and concludes with performances at Caramoor and at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City.In 2016, four young singers (Liv Redpath, soprano; Abigail Levis, mezzo-soprano; Galeano Salas, tenor; and Justin Austin, baritone) participated in the week-long Vocal Rising Stars program under the guidance of Michael Barrett and Steven Blier. The program culminated in two performances; the first at Caramoor and the second at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City.Arts-in-EducationSince 1974, Caramoor has provided students with arts enrichment opportunities that utilize our exceptional facilities, visiting artists, and dedicated staff, while meeting New York State education standards. We place an emphasis on reaching out to schools from under-resourced communities, in particular schools in Yonkers such as the Casimir Pulaski School, the Kahlil Gibran Elementary School, and Scholastic Academy. In 2016 we welcomed over 6,000 students to our campus, with nearly half of those students participating through our Underserved Youth Arts Initiative.Developed in collaboration with teachers and school administrators, our programs meet New York State standards and complement students' classroom education in the arts, social studies, and career development. They include What's in a House?, The Renaissance and The Middle Ages At Caramoor, Chinese Arts & Culture, and Student Strings.</Desc>

<Desc>Rosen House, Gardens and Estate - See Schedule OThe Rosen House is a Mediterranean Revival villa at the center of the Caramoor campus. In recognition of the unsurpassed quality and great quantity of European period rooms incorporated into the fabric of the house, Caramoor was recognized as nationally significant on the National Register of Historic Places in 2011, a distinction that it shares with sites such as Vizcaya in Miami, FL and Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA. Built in the 1930s, it is an incomparable concert venue, a unique classroom for visiting schoolchildren, and a haven for the creative growth of young musicians. In 2016, 3,212 people also visited the historic house for teas, musicales, and tours.Gardens and Estate: The 90-acre Caramoor campus, which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places at the state-wide level of significance in 2001 and at the national level of significance in 2011, is comprised of four primary buildings-today known as the Rosen House, the Administration Building, the Gifford Residence, and the Diane Moss Education Center-as well as ancillary buildings and landscape features, gardens, lawns, and woodland areas. A central focus of the campus is the Venetian Theater, a tented, 1,700+ seat venue (built in 1958 and not a contributing structure to Caramoor's NRHP listing).45 acres of the campus is deer-fenced and open to the visiting public, including the Sunken Garden, established in 1912; a Mediterranean Revival pavilion; an alley of cedar trees; and a number of gardens designed in the 1930s by landscape architect and Katonah resident Robert Ludlow Fowler, Jr. The Caramoor estate provides an incomparable setting for our cultural programs by serving as a stage for music performances and contextualizing the concerts that occur here; providing a learning laboratory for arts-in-education and emerging artist programs; and providing an idyllic haven for more than 40,000 visitors annually. In 2013, Caramoor began a multi-year initiative to revitalize its historic Rosen House. This included making the Rosen House more open to the public, producing more programs in the Music Room, creating a stewardship plan for its art objects, as well as making important improvements, repairs, and restorations of the house and its art objects. From 2013-2016, Caramoor commissioned reports from various advisors to develop a scope of need and possibility to realize a vibrant Rosen House. These reports covered architectural, engineering, visitor experience, security, assessments of the art objects, and other areas of importance. As a result, these reports inspired a first phase of improvements to expand the public restrooms, replace the Music Room chairs and seating risers, and update the enclosures and heating around cloisters during the winter season. The $1.5 million worth of improvements were largely funded by members of the Caramoor Board of Trustees with additional support from other Caramoor patrons. The overall Rosen House initiative and these projects have been very well received by the public and positively reported in articles in the New York Times and the Bedford Record Review.</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>The historic Rosen House, with its period rooms and collections, was open to the public for tours in 2016. In addition, the archival materials are a great source of humanities research in a number of fields. One example is the documentation relating to the Rosens' patronage of Leon Theremin and championing of his early electronic music instrument. This material has been a source of study for theremin researchers, including Robert Moog, who began building theremins in the 1950s as a high school student and later went on to design the Moog synthesizer and Albert Glinsky, Theremin's biographer and the author of Theremin: Ether Music and Espionage. The Rosen House collection demonstrates a tremendous breadth of art objects, furniture, and archival material. The art and furniture encompass hundreds of cataloged objects, including European furniture from the 16th-19th centuries; European medieval and Renaissance paintings, sculpture, textiles, and decorative objects; and Asian statuary. There are also approximately 100 light fixtures and decorative elements by Edward F. Caldwell and Company dating from the 1930s. Other categories include photographs, textiles, early 20th-century costumes, and musical instruments. In addition, there is a wealth of ephemeral material relating to the Rosens, the development of the Caramoor campus, and the establishment of the Summer Music Festival. Objects from the collection displayed in the Music Room of the Rosen House-including a wooden 16th-century Italian ceiling, French and Swiss 16th-century stained glass, Renaissance tapestries, and 17th-century furniture-create an incomparable setting for chamber music performances. The collection also provides primary material for Caramoor's arts-in-education programs. In programs such as The Renaissance and The Middle Ages at Caramoor, Chinese Arts & Culture, and What's in a House? students participate in guided tours and are encouraged to use the collection as inspiration for their own writing, drawing, and music-making. Schedule D, Part III, line 3, Other: Caramoor substantially completed a multi-year Stewardship Project in 2016 to evaluate all of its art objects in its Rosen House. Numerous advisors informed the process of evaluating each of the art objects in the Rosen House based on the following criteria: quality and condition appropriate to our mission and programming standards, cost to steward, accessibility to the public, strongly/uniquely relevant to the Rosens, Caramoor, Rosen House, and/or Caramoor's education programs. The Board of Trustees determined in October 2015 to sell select objects through independent auction houses. Also, the Board of Trustees stipulated that the proceeds be used for the benefit of the Rosen House and its art objects.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>Caramoor followed its conflict of interest policy. A conflict of interest disclosure statement is required to be furnished annually by each trustee and each covered employee disclosing any anticipated or possible conflict situations. Covered employees are senior employees and other employees who have a decision making role in hiring or contracting. Each new trustee is advised of the policy and furnished a disclosure statement upon undertaking the duties of such office. When any conflict of interest may be involved in a transaction requiring action by the Board of Trustees or committee of the Board, the interested person shall call it to the attention of the Board of Trustees or such committee and the trustee concerned shall not vote on the matter. Moreover, the person having a conflict shall retire from the room in which the Board or committee is meeting and may not participate in the final deliberation or decisions regarding the matter under consideration. However, that person may provide the Board or committee with any and all relevant information before retiring. The minutes of the meeting of the Board or committee shall reflect that the conflict of interest was disclosed and that the interested person was not present during the final discussion or vote and did not vote. When there is a doubt as to whether a conflict of interest exists, the matter shall be resolved by the Board of Trustees excluding the person whose situation will be discussed. When any conflict of interest may be involved in a matter involving an employee, such employee shall notify the Board of Trustees and the Chief Executive Officer of Caramoor. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the Board of Trustees may waive any disclosed conflict if it determines such waiver to be in the best interests of Caramoor.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>Caramoor has a formal Compensation Committee which reviews annually salaries, bonuses, and benefits for all Caramoor employees. The Committee pays special attention to the positions of CEO, Managing Director, CDO, CFO, and CMO. Annual reviews include self-assessment by the employee, the employee's supervisor, and recommendations from the CEO. The CEO also receives a review from the Compensation Committee. Trustees that sit on the Compensation Committee have all signed "conflict of interest" declarations, and do so annually. The Chair of the Committee is one of the leading non-profit recruiters and as such provides meaningful insights on compensation benchmarks. The Committee reviews salaries and compensation for similar sized arts organizations in the New York area, and nationally, and uses this information in their decision making. Minutes of the Committee's deliberations and decisions are forwarded to the CFO to be carried out and filed. The last meeting of the Compensation Committee, in 2016, took place on December 9.</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>Through their generous commitment of time, enthusiasm, and expertise, Caramoor benefits from the contributions of volunteers throughout the year. In 2016, over 200 people volunteered part-time at Caramoor in a variety of capacities. This number was determined by the scope of Caramoor's presenting activities and educational programs, in addition to the availability of the volunteers themselves. The majority of volunteers act as ushers at Caramoor's year-round music presentations. They are often the public face of Caramoor, acting as greeters, helping audience members to their seats, and helping to ensure the visiting public's safety and comfort. * 25-60 ushers work at each concert in the Venetian Theater * 16-30 ushers work at each concert in the Spanish Courtyard * 10 ushers work at each concert in the Music Room * 10 ushers work at each Dancing at Dusk concert on Friends' Field * 20 ushers work at each concert in the Sunken Garden Volunteers also play a major role in Caramoor's arts-in-education programs. They give tours of the collection, lead various elements of each program, and help children and teachers through the campus. They also provide guidance during public tours of the Rosen House as well as performing clerical duties and undertaking cataloging projects. Caramoor's Board of Trustees is responsible for the organization's governance, long-term strategy, and fiduciary oversight, while the senior staff is responsible for the day-to-day operation of Caramoor, including management and recommending annual budgets to the board. The board and staff work collaboratively in setting priorities for the organization's future. Caramoor's 34 board members come from diverse backgrounds and bring a wide range of professional expertise. By serving on various committees, including Finance, Building, Marketing, Development, and more, our board members act as fully engaged stewards of Caramoor's mission. Nearly 100% of the board participates personally by making major contributions to support annual operating costs as well as fundraising for Caramoor. Additionally, individual board members support the organization through the establishment of endowment funds and contributions toward capital purchases. Established in 2013, the Advisory Council is comprised of members who have demonstrated a deep commitment to furthering Caramoor's mission and impact. The group formally meet twice a year, once with the Board of Trustees for Caramoor's Annual Meeting, and once on their own. Members also serve as members of committees of the organization, are involved in special initiatives/projects, and in advisory roles to various staff members. Individuals are selected by the Governance Committee from among our dedicated ticket buyers and donors for renewable terms of three years. Some Advisory Council members have moved up to serve on the Board of Trustees after service on the Advisory Council. The engagement of the Advisory Council continues to be an important element of Caramoor's success in engaging the broader community and undertaking a larger volume of initiatives with success.</ExplanationTxt>
