<Desc>The HBCU Rising: A Campus-Public Schools Literacy and STEM Mentoring Initiative This innovative, curriculum-based initiative uses a three-tiered group-mentoring model in which corporate volunteers in STEM-related professions coach college students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) who work in teams to coach middle schoolers and support school teachers in science and math classes in under-resourced public schools. It is the mission of the HBCU Rising to address the underrepresentation of people of color in scientific fields in our country, by providing engaging opportunities for economically vulnerable students to learn more about STEM subjects in a culturally grounded, experiential, fun and accessible way. The HBCU Rising aims to fill the pipeline for unfilled STEM-related jobs, for which the representation of African American participation is by far the lowest of any ethnic or racial group. Our program addresses these challenges, while at the same time supporting economically vulnerable college students, who are fairly compensated as mentors and provided workforce-development training to better prepare them for 21st-century careers. In 2016 our program served approximately 300 middle school students and 20 college mentors.</Desc>

<Desc>The Rising: Elevating Education, Expectations and Self-Esteem: ChicagoThe Rising is a consciousness-changing, healing and academic support program designed to override the systemic inequities that affect Black children living in high-poverty situations the most, by creating a web of culturally anchored support services, working through schools, local leadership and other community-based organizations. In Chicago, our largest site, the program is embedded at John M. Harlan High School on the city's Southside. Working hand-in-hand with school administrators, educators and parents, The Rising instills in our young a deep sense of racial pride, self-worth, confidence and hope for the future. Created by subject-matter experts, the trauma-informed model-enhanced by partner-provided wraparound supports-engages communities, surrounding young people with caring adults so that they are fortified and able to withstand structural racism and embrace their potential. Through large-group auditorium sessions and single-gender healing sessions led by a trained facilitatorWellness Mentoring Circles-along with other curriculum-aligned programming including a strong focus on workforce development and readiness, youngsters work closely with trained psychologists and mentors to heal traumas, so they are emotionally healthy and able to succeed socially and academically.</Desc>

<Desc>Affiliate Development and Mentor Recruitment and Training: The National CARES Mentoring Movement began its work as a mentor-recruitment agency devoted to seeking and deploying to schools and youth-support organizations the most needed and difficult-to-find volunteersAfrican American men and women. We soon learned from our recruits that few mentoring organizations we connected them with offered the grounding, skills and support needed to serve adequately children suffering from the effects of poverty. Before our trainings, many mentors felt that they had an incomplete understanding of how the effects of poverty were impacting children's lives, and many also felt that they themselves needed support and undergirding in order to advance and secure young, fragile lives. In response, CARES formed a 60-person, multidisciplinary, intergenerational Brain Trust that worked in teams for a year to develop a road-map to wellness, self-love, self-sufficiency and, ultimately, healthy communities. Contributors to the manual included scholars and academics, advocates and activists, artists, researchers, journalists, youth-development experts, doctors and other wellness professionals. Today, their remarkable collaboration provides the guiding philosophical framework for all our programmatic work: the 149-page manual, A New Way Forward: Healing What's Hurting Black America.Following the wisdom of A New Way Forward, our seminal program is Affiliate Development. Its core activity is recruiting, training and deploying caring and able mentors. Through monthly group teleconferences, weekly one-on-one support calls and annual all-Affiliate gatherings, National CARES strengthens the leadership capacity of our network of 58 CARES Mentor Recruitment Affiliates throughout the nation our volunteer army. Through the development of shared principles, protocols and language, our leaders are able to effectively, and with deep cultural competency, recruit adults to serve as mentors and deploy them to schools and youth-support organizations around the country that are desperate for Black volunteers and that use the traditional one-to-one model of mentoring. In some cities, our local leaders are also recruiting and training mentors to work in CARES-created, group mentoring programs.</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>Accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America require management to evaluate tax positions taken by the Organization and recognize a tax liability if the Organization has taken an uncertain tax position that more likely than not would be sustained upon examination by the Internal Revenue Service. The Organization is subject to routine audits by taxing jurisdictions; however, there are currently no audits for any tax periods in progress. Management believes it is no longer subject to income tax examinations prior to 2013.</ExplanationTxt>

<FormAndLineReferenceDesc>Form 990, Part III, Line 4d: Other Program Services Description</FormAndLineReferenceDesc>
<ExplanationTxt>OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: The HBCU Rising: A Campus-Public Schools Literacy and STEM Mentoring Initiative This innovative, curriculum-based initiative uses a three-tiered group-mentoring model in which corporate volunteers in STEM-related professions coach college students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) who work in teams to coach middle schoolers and support school teachers in science and math classes in under-resourced public schools. In 2016 our program served approximately 300 middle school students and 20 college mentors. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Affiliate Development and Mentor Recruitment and Training: The National CARES Mentoring Movement began its work as a mentor-recruitment agency devoted to seeking and deploying to schools and youth-support organizations the most needed and difficult-to-find volunteersAfrican American men and women. In some cities, our local leaders are also recruiting and training mentors to work in CARES-created, group mentoring programs.
