Funds from these events are given to families in need to cover day-to-day expenses so they can focus on their child's health, rather than their financial shortfalls. In 2016 the organization gave over $242,133 in assistance to 99 families, of which 64 families received assistance for the first time. This all volunteer organization receives most of its referrals from the Children's Mercy Hospital Network and the University of Kansas Hospital system. SKF helps families with children in the hospital to cover such expenses as rent and mortgage payments, utility bills, car repairs and gasoline. In the most unfortunate cases SKF has paid for a child's funeral expenses. The social worker completes a form requesting assistance on behalf of the family along with the type and amount of assistance requested. A committee of three board members from SKF reviews the request and can approve requests less than $3,000 if at least 2 of the 3 members vote in affirmative. For requests greater than $3,000, the entire board is included for approval. In most cases the request is fulfilled by payment directly to the specific vendor such as utility, landlord, mortgage company, etc. If the family has already paid the invoice, the family is reimbursed for the expenses by SKF. Form 990, Part III, Line 2 In 2016, the Organization collected funds specifically to be used for providing scholarships toward college or vocational school for kids who previously received assistance from the Organization.
