The planning meetings and trainings place an emphasis on volunteer recruitment and retention via leadership development. A highlight for 2016 was community organizer training with the American Civil Liberties Union, Southern California. 2016 Non-Partisan Civic Engagement Projects CNC received regrants from California Calls in the following amounts for work related to Propositions 55,56,57.1. CNC Fresno $121,556.162. CNC Merced $90,743.763. CNC Coachella $80,255.88Integrated Leadership Development and Voter Engagement Strategy: Communities for a New California places a premium on increasing year-round civic participation and electoral participation in order to make real and concrete improvements for families living in the rural areas of California. CNC has experienced our non-partisan civic engagement programs become increasingly effective in educating and motivating voters to become consistent in casting their ballots. Proposition 55 to fund schools and health care: CNC supported Proposition 55 in 2016 by contacting voters via live phone calls and door-to-door canvassing in Fresno, Merced and Riverside Counties. CNC supported the $4-$9 billion a year between 2019 and 2030 Proposition 55 would potentially raise to go toward K-12 schools, community colleges, and Medi-Cal. Proposition 56 to save lives and fund health care by taxing cigarettes: CNC supported Proposition 56 in 2016 by contacting voters via live phone calls and door-to-door canvassing in Fresno, Merced and Riverside Counties. CNC felt Proposition 56 was needed to prevent people, especially teenagers from smoking. It tripled funding for health care for children and seniors. And, it would bring Californias tobacco taxes in line with most other states in the nation given the last time California raised cigarette taxes was 1998. Over 80% of the projected new $1.4 billion a year in revenue would fund Medi-Cal to provide health care to low-income Californians by Proposition 57 unfair prison sentences hurt California families. CNC supported Proposition 57 in 2016 by contacting voters via live phone calls and door-to-door canvassing in Fresno, Merced and Riverside Counties. CNC supported Proposition 57 because it protects young people from being tried as adults. 90% of youth prosecuted as adults are African-American, Latino or Asian. Proposition 57 allows for more Californians to quality for parole after completing the first full term of their sentence. It provides credits for good behavior and encourages completion of rehabilitation and education.
