After our Hospitaller Committee reviews the requests for funding, money is granted to various organizations that submitted their applications. In addition, individuals sent funds separately requesting the Order to send funds to organizations supported and approved of by the Order. The Order also provides additional money to help support centers built by and supported largely by the Order of Malta within and outside the United States. 954696 Lourdes Pilgrimage: The Lourdes and Youth Pilgrimage Programs are annual events wherein the Order of Malta takes severely ill (e.g., cancer patients) to Lourdes, France for a 10 day spiritual retreat. All expense are paid for by the Order. These programs are designed to assist the sick or poor and to feed the hungry. Part X, Line 2: The Order is a qualified organization exempt from federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and California franchise taxes under section 23701d of the California Revenue and Taxation Code. The Order has adopted the accounting standard on accounting for uncertainty in income taxes, which prescribes a recognition threshold and measurement attribute for the financial statement recognition and measurement of a tax position taken, or expected to be taken, in a tax return and requires the affirmative evaluation that is more-likely-than-not, based on the technical merits of a tax position, that an enterprise is entitled to economic benefits resulting from tax positions taken in income tax returns. For tax exempt entities, favorable tax status itself is deemed to be an uncertainty, as events could potentially occur to jeopardize their tax exempt status. If a tax position does not meet the more-likely-than-not recognition threshold, the benefit of that position is not recognized in the financial statements. This standard also requires organizations to disclose additional quantitative adn qualitative information in their financial statements about uncertain tax positions. The Order's evaluation on June 30, 2017 revealed no tax positions that would have a material impact on the financial statements. The 2014 through 2016 tax years remain subject to examination by the Internal Revenue Service. In addition, the 2013 through 2016 tax years remain subject to examination by the California Franchise Tax Board.
