The remaining collection, archives, and photographic collections are housed in the nearby Holland office building which are available to the public by appointment. 11426 1405 During the fiscal year, the museum staff, with the help of college interns and volunteers, continue to update the Traveling Trunk Program, which identifies different periods in our area's history and offers trunk shows to area schools and organizations. These aids help the interpreter make this history "come alive" for the participants. Lewis & Clark Trunk Show-A variety of artifacts and documents pertaining to the Corps of Discovery Expedition to the Pacific Coast. Features Native American trade goods, tools and utensils used by the Corps, Pipehawks, the Jefferson Peace Medal and more.Civil War Trunk Show-A variety of artifacts and documents pertaining to Missouri's involvement in the Civil War. Features union uniforms, solder's accoutrements, period clothing and various books regarding personal memoirs during the war. Contents helps shed light on the role Missouri played as a border state.WWI Trunk Show -A variety of artifacts and documents pertaining to World War II. Features U.S. Army and German mess kits, military uniforms, U.S. military patches, recruitment posters and more. Helps audience gain perspective on the living conditions, both home and abroad, during the war.Pioneer Experience Trunk Show-A variety of artifacts and documents pertaining to earler settlers in the Missouri region beginning in the early 1800's. Features period clothing, cooking utensils, household items and toys that were common during this period.Early Native Americans Trunk Show-A variety of artfacts and documents pertaining to early Native Americans who lied and migrated throughout Missouri. Features projectile points, animal pelts, buffalo horns and trade blankets. There are six main areas of focus: "Gateway to Indian Territory" - What tribes originally lived here and what life was like for them. Traces part of the "Trail of Tears" through our region. There will be a life-sized teepee for visitors to experience. "Birthplace of Route 66" - Shares Springfield's claim as the city was finally assigned its highway number and its current moniker "The Mother Road" due to some very active Springfield business men who had the true vision of this "nationwide" highway. It includes life-sized replicas of local area attractions along the original route such as "Red's Giant Hamburg", the first "drive-thru" restaurant, motel signs and gas pumps from this period. "Trains, Trolleys and Transportation" - A children's area that teaches about era of horse and wagons, horseless carriages, automobiles, electric streetcars, buses and trains. There will be a life-sized replica of a steam locomotive and streetcar for the children to climb aboard. This will include tables and chairs for school children historical programs and "hands on" activities to participate in. "Wild Bill Hickok and the Wild West" - This area educates the visitor of our "western" heritage and allows the visitor to recreate an interactive Wild Bill Hickok shoot-out that occurred in front of our own building. "Civil War in Springfield" - Covers the Battle of Springfield and the Battle of Wilson's Creek; what life was like during that time and the impact of our "border state" status to its residents.
