The number of girls increased from 3 in 2016 to 14 in 2017, an important achievement as girls culturally do not receive training or employment in the trades.In addition to the trade of plumbing,electricity & carpentry the school added masonry, computer science and English to the curriculum with a fully equiped computer lab. With their new skills, the students are developing student run enterprises to help the school become self-sustainable. Plans are being made for a bakery, photo lab and soap making.Kivu Hills Academy was accredited by the Rwandan Workforce Development Authority (WDA) as Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) school and the government has recognized KHA as a model school in the country.Funding for Phase II of construction which includes 3 additional blocks of classrooms, a workshop and septic system was obtained during the year and construction began in September with completetion scheduled in early 2018 when the third class enrolls. The school construction continues to bring much needed work to the community and many of the local people are benefiting from the project and the income it brings to Boneza.The preschools continue to grow in numbers serving the poorest children in the community with an addition of a fifth preschool. In 2017, 267 children attended preschools learning lessons in numbers, letters and English language. A "Bowl of Porridge" continues to be an important part of the day, offering nutrition to these young children and preparaing them for success when they attend the government school. 87800 87800 Community Development:More cows were brought to Boneza through the "Have a Cow" program for needy families in the community. These deserving families are identified by the local leaders so that the recipients have an important source for food secutity and self-respect.The microenterprise specialist continues to help the women of the community form Savings Groups where they come together weekly to contribute their earnings, seek loans for their projects, learn business plans and share success. A sewing coop was formed with the donation of 10 treadle sewing machines and the women are coming together to learn to sew, practicing on paper to make straight seems and even stitiches. They are now producing products for sale in the community.Assistance was provided to identified needs of the local community such as the rebuilding of homes of a widow and a KHA studentthat were damaged or destroyed during the rainy season and for local churches in need of repair.All of the 8 wells that were previously drilled in Boneza are working well and some have been mechanized to provide a greater supply. Villagers are trained on the importance of keeping the well clean and maintained.The organization continues to reach out to the community through chapel programs held every Friday at KHA.
