This year's film program alone included 6 feature and 87 short films, with programs taking place at prestigious institutions including the American Museum of Natural History, the Rubin Museum, National Sawdust, New York University, the New School, the Rockefeller University, and the New York Hall of Science. Programming for the latter was specially targeted to younger audiences and families, while middle-school age students participated in a special marine biology and filmmaking workshop held with the new Biobase Harlem. Other film events were co-hosted with the Margaret Mead Film Festival and with the Rubin Museum's current sound-themed exhibition, while screenings co-presented with New School engaged directly with their faculty and students, and provided a direct link between students and filmmakers for their sci-film-oriented course work. Two new events held for the first time this year, Transgenic Cinema: Collaborating with Scientists and ISF Film Market Day, focused on guiding students and filmmakers through the sci-film collaboration process and, once completed, into distribution. Finally, we've increased our direct involvement in facilitating science-film collaboration on the production side. Partnering with the Simons Foundation, this year's Symbiosis Competition was our biggest yet, with six teams of filmmakers and scientists from around the world working over the course of the festival to create original films, which were then presented on closing night. And our opening night film, Mosaic, was an omnibus feature spearheaded by Imagine Science Films, wherein ten filmmakers from five countries created new short films exploring concepts of hybridity, in forms merging documentary and fiction. The project was further deepened by interviews with five scientists, including two Nobel Laureates.Additional programming in New York City throughout the year included a children's science film program at BRIC Arts | Media House in the winter and five editions of our ongoing Science Matters screening series featuring the works of, and conversation with, Noah Hutton, Emily Driscoll, Liron Unreich & Daniella Schiller, Flora Lichtman & Sharon Shattuck, and Experiments in Art and Technology (hosted by the Museum of the Moving Image's Sonia Epstein. National and international operations included a program with the Athens Digital Arts Festival in May 2017, three nights of films at Wofford College in South Carolina in September, and three film programs at the Copernicus Museum in Warsaw as part of the Przemiany Festival, also in September, we organized and ran two more full multi-day festivals: Imagine Science Abu Dhabi in March (including film programs, performances, an art show, gallery talks and a student filmmaking workshop for middle school students) and Imagine Science Paris in June.In addition to these operations, we've also vastly increased the reach of our programming through our new sister organization Labocine.com (begun in August 2016), which brings monthly video magazine issues featuring new films and past festival favorites to streaming audiences around the world, and regular Spotlight stories featuring interviews and in-depth surveys of the works of other filmmakers and artists.
