With 57 clinics in 26 states and Canada, AOEC is a resource for workers and communities that need specialized occupational and environmental medicine (OEM) services. Besides providing expert care, most clinics also offer a range of preventive services, including social work and industrial hygiene. AOEC has also worked on capacity building efforts to help clinics and communities that need it most, such as the Gulf region after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill where AOEC has worked to establish a Gulf Coast-wide specialty referral network. AOEC has worked with the Tulane team to establish a Gulf Coast-wide specialty referral network, specifically collaborating with AOEC clinics and individual AOEC members in the region. The regional capacity in environmental health will be augmented with AOEC expertise at the national level. AOEC is providing compensation for certain occupational and environmental evaluations under this program as well.Recognizing the need to train the next generation, for the past 15 years AOEC has run the Occupational Health Internship Program (OHIP) This nine-week summer internship matches pairs of interns with labor unions, worker centers, and other nonprofits serving workers. The interns use community-based participatory research methods to investigate a workplace health and safety issue of the host organization's choosing. To ensure that the interns learn from workers' experiences, each project includes extensive direct interaction with workers. The interns also produce "give-back" products to aid the workers or host organizations in their health and safety efforts.AOEC continues to provide clinical and public health expertise to worker training programs, unions and other organizations, such as the project with the Botherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes Division (BMWED). The project examined the health risks of BMWED members from 1979 to 2010 by conducting a mortality study of the membership followed by a second study of a selected groups of illnesses. The first part of the project involved investigating the patterns of deaths are among BMWED members compared to the general risk of death among the whole U.S. population. The second part was a case-control assessment.
