An important part of this mission is to support the Linda Crnic Institute for Down syndrome to eradicate the medical and cognitive ill effects associated with Down syndrome and to ensure people with the condition can reach their true potential. 0 0 1528457 800000 Research and clinical care: Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, is when a person is born with three copies of chromosome 21 instead of the usual two. Global provides research grants and support to the Linda Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome (Crnic Institue) and the Sie Center for Down Syndrome at Children's Hospital Colorado. Scientists at the Crnic Institute are working to understand how trisomy 21 leads to higher incidence of certain diseases (e.g. Alzheimer's disease, leukemia, autoimmune disorders) and protects those same individuals with Down syndrome from other diseases (e.g. breast cancer and most forms of heart attack and stroke). The Sie Center provides outstanding medical care to thousands of patients from 28 states and 10 countries. This outstanding medical care for patients with Down syndrome informs the Crnic Institute's research which in turn will improve the health and lifespan of our patients.
