We renewed our organic certification and cultivated 5.5 of organic annual vegetables for sale and distribution at our market stand on-site, to wholesale customers, at a farmer's market, to the grocery co-op, to local restaurants and entrepreneurs and for donations to program participants, neighbors and our community food shelf. This food reached hundreds of community members. We also grew vegetables in the hoop house. We also focused on intensive soil building through cover crops. We planted thousands of perennial plants in a permaculture design that will bear fruit for decades to come, including: asparagus, aronia berries, honeyberries, and plum, apple, pear, and cherry trees. We maintained our water management system with a number of environmental benefits, including reducing stormwater run-off, preventing soil erosion and limiting our use of municipal water. Farm production serves as an education and community building tool. We had approximately 350 people contribute over 3,100 hours of volunteer labor and education on-site. We grew over 60 different crops and grew over 10,500 pounds of organic produce in this second season of farm production. 81618 0 2421 Frogtown Farm Commons. The Frogtown Farm Commons is the education and demonstration component of our urban farm. This 12,000 sq ft section of our farm is operated as a communal farm for the neighborhood with a scale that community member participants can replicate in their own back yards or community gardens. We have three set work days per week and use a skillshare approach to knowledge building for everything from planting, harvesting, cooking and preserving. We also have community and regional leaders that conduct workshops on a range of topics. We had 177 regular, ongoing participants in the Commons and donated 2,500 pounds of produce for program participants to harvest food and take home. In 2017, we offered over 60 gardening sessions with community members to teach and learn from each other. 0 0 0 Community Outreach & Engagement. Frogtown Farm is a community-based organization founded by four community residents. Community engagement is critical to our decision-making, design, programming and food production. In 2017, we worked with commuity members and partners to cultivate relationships, build partnership and do neighborhood outreach through canvassing, attending events, hosting events. We are also working with several key community partners to develop a long-term plan to build a stronger and sovereign community food system. We hosted two large annual events, in the spring and fall, that brought together community members, community resources, free giveaways, artists, music and more. These two events together drew over 1,000 people to the farm site. We also hosted tours, school groups, workshops and conferences ongoing. Through this outreach, thousands of people across generations and cultures had the opportunity to visit Frogtown and learn more about urban agriculture. We had 500 people that volunteered on the farm, everything from seeding, weeding, watering to flyering and filing.
