<Desc>In 2017, Trust for Americas Health (TFAH) continued to advance its mission to promote optimal health for every person and community and make the prevention of illness and injury a national priority. As a nonprofit, nonpartisan public health policy, research, and advocacy organization, TFAH set forth a vision of a nation that values the health and well-being of all and where prevention and health equity are foundational to policymaking at all levels of society. Across the range of public health issues TFAH addressed, including obesity, substance misuse and suicide, public health emergency preparedness, prevention and public health policy, public health financing, chronic illness, and infectious disease, TFAH promoted public health policies that affect the entire nation, with an emphasis on how public health policies and programs can promote healthy individuals and communities regardless of geography.TFAH maintains and enhances its work with traditional and new partners on high-impact health issues. Throughout its efforts, TFAH is also committed to advancing health equity and addressing the social determinants of health which are the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, including through collaborative, multisectoral approaches. TFAHs work is guided by values of equity, independence, evidence-based, trust, partnerships, innovation, and financial stewardship.TFAHs projects focused on advancing an evidence-based public health system that is ready to meet the challenges of the 21st century. TFAH successfully published evidence-based reports; developed and advanced effective policy recommendations and approaches; hosted policy convenings and learning collaboratives; spearheaded targeted initiatives and outreach; collaborated with partners at the national, state, and local levels; and produced educational resources. For example, TFAH continued its partnership with the Healthy Schools Campaign on co-leading the Healthy Students, Promising Futures Learning Collaborative to support states in expanding school health services and promoting healthy school environments and its collaboration with the American Hospital Association to strengthen state hospital association and state health department collaboration on priority population health issues such as the opioid crisis, diabetes, and maternal mortality.Among TFAHs accomplishments in 2017:TFAH released a groundbreaking new report, Pain in the Nation: The Drug, Alcohol, and Suicide Crises and the Need for a National Resilience Strategy, responding to the dramatic increase in the death rates for these three epidemics. The report examined the data of drug overdose deaths, alcohol-related deaths, and suicides, projected the potential impact over the coming decade, focused on promising practices and evidence-based policies and interventions, and highlighted action steps for the future. The action steps include a call for the creation of a National Resilience Strategy that takes a comprehensive approach by focusing on prevention, early identification of issues, and effective treatment.TFAH embarked upon new initiatives to address emerging public health issues, including an initiative to promote the health and well-being of older adults by advancing an age-friendly public health system. TFAH convened national, state, and local public health officials; aging experts, advocates, and service providers; and healthcare officials to explore how public health can improve the health and well-being of older adults. The convening resulted in the development of a Framework for an Age-Friendly Public Health System that describes key roles public health can adopt to improve the health and well-being of older Americans. TFAH has expanded beyond this feasibility analysis to further develop the Framework and engage local and state public health in Florida and across the nation in efforts to promote healthy aging. With states both serving as key partners and having increasing responsibility for many health policies and programs, TFAH launched Promoting Health and Cost Control in States (PHACCS), a new project aimed to inform state policymakers and public health advocates of effective state polices to improve health and control costs. The PHACCS project focuses on state level policies that can be adopted and implemented to promote health and control cost growth. PHACCS looks beyond healthcare to foster cross-sector collaboration, recognizing impacts in other sectors can impact population well-being, impact disparities and equity, and impact states strategies to control costs.TFAH published and disseminated a series of reports and issue briefings, including:1.The State of Obesity 2017: Better Policies for a Healthier America: This 14th annual report by TFAH and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation summarized national and state level obesity trends and documented that adult obesity rates are showing signs of leveling off, but that progress could be eroded if programs are cut and policies are weakened.2.Ready or Not? Protecting the Publics Health from Diseases, Disasters and Bioterrorism, 2017: This report found that the nation does not invest enough to maintain strong, basic core capabilities for health security readiness. The report includes a review of state and federal public health preparedness policies and a series of recommendations that address many of the major gaps in public health emergency preparedness.3.Pain in the Nation: The Drug, Alcohol, and Suicide Crises and the Need for a National Resilience Strategy: This report examined the data of drug overdose deaths, alcohol-related deaths, and suicides, projected the potential impact over the coming decade, focused on promising practices and evidence-based policies and interventions, and highlights action steps for the future, including calling for the creation of a National Resilience Strategy. 4.A Funding Crisis for Public Health and Safety: State-by-State Public Health Funding and Key Health Facts, 2017: This report summarized public health funding at both the national and state level and key health facts in states and includes recommendations for ways in which public health funding needs to be increased.5.Special Analysis: How Healthy Is Your Congressional District?: This analysis is a one-year snapshot of seven preventive health measures for each congressional district, for each state, and the District of Columbia, which serves as a resource of information on the health of a congressional district or state.6.Issue Brief: Impact of the 2017 Health Reform Proposals on Clinical Preventive Services: This brief reviewed the current status of public and private insurance coverage of preventive services, and the implications if they were eliminated or reduced.7.Special Analysis: Prevention and Public Health Fund Federal and State Allocations: This analysis is a state-by-state analysis of the potential loss of funding from the Prevention and Public Health Fund if the Fund were reduced and the potential public health impacts.8.Issue Brief: National Survey of Registered Voters on Public Health: This survey is a national survey of registered voters that found that nearly three-quarters of Americans support increasing investments to improve the health of communities.</Desc>
