These programs and services were guided by the Foundations mission and vision, national giving trends and donor feedback provided through the Foundations annual donor survey. Following are new programs and services that were integrated into organizational operations in 2017: - New Fund Offering: Non-advised Charitable Fund In response to the Tax and Jobs Act of 2017, QCDs to a non-advised fund, as well as bundling charitable gifts into a given tax year, have grown in popularity. In late 2017, the Foundation expanded its charitable products to include the non-advised fund. Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) from Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are a relevant giving strategy among people 70 or older. Foundation donors and prospective donors are now able to provide ongoing support to one or more charities over time by giving QCDs to a non-advised fund. At the time the fund is established, donors select charities to receive ongoing annual grant distributions from their non-advised charitable fund, either in perpetuity or for a term a years. After the fund is established, the donor does not have advisory capacity, and may not add or remove charities or change any other parameters of their non-advised fund. - Endowment Services A broad range of organizational endowment marketing resources were developed and introduced to help faith-based partners grow their endowments: - Marketing resources In response to feedback from endowment fund advisors, the Foundation developed its Endowment Marketing Toolkit. This toolkit is designed to help endowment committees raise awareness of, and motivate giving to, their endowment funds at the Foundation. - Online webinars Foundation staff hosted two interactive webinars for endowment fund advisors and supporters to grow awareness and interest of their organizational endowments. Topics highlighted were best practices to promote your endowment, and investment and stewardship of your endowment. - Electronic communications The Foundation launched a quarterly e-news communication for fund advisors, which includes an investment market and performance update, planned giving tips and resources, and other relevant Foundation updates. -2017 Investment Portfolio Enhancements - The Foundations commitment to diversification and a long-term investment strategy for charitable assets was demonstrated by the introduction of a 10% private equities allocation to the Core Growth Portfolio. - Within the Mission Growth Portfolio, a number of enhancements to the asset allocation and underlying roster of mission-based investment managers were made in 2017. This portfolio offers increased diversification through the addition of five new investment managers and mission-related investments that enhance positive community outcomes. - WomenGive inFaith Campaign The year 2017 marked the second year of the Foundations WomenGive inFaith Campaign. This nationwide campaign brings women together through workshops, scholarships, investments and giving circles to achieve long-term change for women, girls and families. In 2017, the Foundation rolled out two major components of the WomenGive inFaith Campaign, including the launch of the WomenLead Scholarship and WomenInvest Portfolio for charitable assets. The Foundations eighth giving circle, WomenGather was also created. - WomenInvest Portfolio With the introduction of WomenInvest inFaith in July of 2017, Foundation donors have a new investment portfolio for their charitable assets. This first-of-its kind portfolio invests in companies that do well when women do well. WomenInvest, comprised of 75% equities and 25% fixed income investments, seeks to interrupt the cycle of violence against women by investing in economic opportunity, access to education and affordable housing. The Foundation hosted a donor and community event celebrating its 15 years of work to end domestic violence and the launch of its new groundbreaking portfolio. Attendees were invited to consider creating their own donor advised funds, investing their charitable assets in the WomenInvest Portfolio. Attendees were also encouraged to learn more about how they can achieve change through the Foundations WomenGive InFaith Campaign, which offers workshops, giving circles and scholarships. - Program Initiatives of the Foundation Collaborative Funds The Foundations mission and vision are driven by a rich Christian tradition of working together to address important and diverse societal issues with creativity, passion and purpose. Through its Collaborative Funds, the Foundation works alongside public charities at the ground level, and creates strategic responses to issues facing our shared community through its grant process. In 2017, Collaborative Fund grants helped: 1) train church communities to recognize and support victims of domestic abuse; 2) international communities rebuild following natural disasters; and 3) faith communities assist in caring for Gods creation. In 2017, the Foundation developed access to water as its new guiding focus for the Creation Care Initiative. Access to water is increasingly compromised by droughts, pollution, rising tides and flooding and is impacting many people, most tangibly the marginalized and vulnerable. Faith communities and the Creation Care Initiative are well positioned to respond to this emerging issue. Following is more detailed information about three new Creation Care grantee partners and other grantees selected to benefit from the Foundations Collaborative Funds: - Creation Care Initiative Grants Creation Justice Ministries (CJM), $40,000 CJM represents a broad coalition of ecumenical members (38 denominations) in the work of educating and mobilizing Christian denominations, churches and individuals to protect, restore and rightly share Gods creation. CJM has responded on the front lines of water crises, such as Flint, Detroit and Appalachia. This grant is deepening Christian engagement on water issues on a national level, with specific focus on Appalachia and Michigan. Minneapolis Area Synod of the ELCA (MAS), $40,000 One initiative of MAS is the EcoFaith Network, which is leading Our Watershed Moment by engaging communities of faith in dialogue and action around water. This grant is replicating their organizing structure ecumenically with local judicatories, including the African Methodist Episcopal, Episcopal and Methodist church bodies. Ecumenical Water Network of the World Council of Churches (EWN of WCC), $20,000 The WCC is a fellowship of 348 churches representing 560 million Christians in more than 110 countries. This grant will support one of its networks, EWN, in holding its second annual Eco-School on Water, Food and Climate Justice. In 2018 the training is bringing together 25 young people from Latin America and the Caribbean in an ecumenical setting to study the local, regional, and international manifestation and causes of the worlds water crisis, challenges to food security, and the effects of climate change. - Other 2017 Collaborative Fund/Field of Interest Fund Grants Ending Family Violence Initiative FaithTrust Institute ($105,000) for the Safe & Healthy Churches program. International Disaster Relief Initiative Lutheran World Relief ($30,000) for rebuilding efforts in the Caribbean, in partnership with the Thrivent Employee Giving Campaign. Disaster Response Field of Interest Fund Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota ($10,000) for the Camp Noah program. Education Field of Interest Fund Foundation scholarships ($19,000). ELCA Field of Interest Fund Southeastern Synod of the ELCA ($10,000) for the establishment of the Good Samaritan Ministry for refugees. Human Services Field of Interest Fund Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest ($10,000) for the I-HELP Program to house homeless women and families. Health Field of Interest Fund Project Feast ($10,000) for general support to train refugees for jobs in healthy food entrepreneurship. Presidents Fund FaithTrust Institute ($15,000) for the development of Why Faith Matters, an online resource network for practitioners of faith to support victims of violence and sexual assault. Form 990, Part III, Line 4a The following accomplishments represent 2017 program service highlights that supported the Foundations mission to spread joy and change lives: - Donors made outright and deferred gifts totaling $101 million to the Foundation in 2017, making it the second highest giving year in the Foundation's history. Nearly 25% of these gifts were from current donors adding to their charitable funds. - Individuals and families created 400 new donor advised funds in 2017. Faith-based nonprofits and churches established 29 new endowment funds. Collectively, these charitable funds provide millions of dollars to charities serving our local, national and global communities. Each donor gift and charitable fund play an integral role in the Foundation's mission, as together we change lives and spread joy by sharing our blessings with the world. - Donor satisfaction remained high at 98% in 2017. Donor feedback through surveys, focus groups and personal conversations also provided valuable ideas on how the Foundation can better serve its donors. - Types of charities recommended to receive support include: churches (34%); education (19%); human services (13%); faith-based nonprofits (18%); health services (5%); arts and culture, environmental concerns, disaster relief and other (11%). The majority of Foundation grants, 92%, were distributed to charities recommended by donors through individual donor advised funds. Foundation donors provided remarkable financial support in the wake of 2017 natural disasters in the U.S. and Mexico. In collaboration with Thrivent through its matching campaign and online member donation program, donors contributed more than $2 million ($1.7 million directly from Thrivent members through the online program, and $300,000 through donor advised funds) for hurricane, flooding and wild fire relief.
