According to research by the Transportation Sustainbility Research Council in Berkeley, California, every carsharing vehicle placed in service takes an average 9-13 personally owned vehicles off the road. In addition, carsharing vehicles are on average 10 mpg more fuel efficient than personally owned vehicles. Operation of the fleet has resulted in significant reductions in tailpipe emissions, reduced congestion, and enhanced quality of life for residents of the Twin Cities.Through our Increased Access Hub program, HOURCAR provides carsharing access to people living in low-income, disadvantaged neighborhoods. We currently have eight such hubs located in the Phillips Community, Hamline-Midway Neighborhood, and Frogtown/Thomas-Dale Neighborhood. Based on the Department of Health and Human Services Poverty Guidelines for 2017, all the Increased Access Hubs are located in neighborhoods in which the median income for a majority of households is less than $49,200 or 200% of the poverty guideline for a family/household of 4 persons. In October 2017, we lowered prices at these hubs 20-25% below our normal rates.HOURCAR organized and engaged in educational events to inform the public about the environmental and cost benefits of the multi-modal lifestyle. We recruited over 100 volunteers who put in over 500 hours of service. HOURCAR was invited to participate in several educational events to discuss carsharing and multi-modal transportation. Additionally HOURCAR has continued to work on college campuses in MPLS/STP to increase awareness of carsharing and educate students on how they can live in a more sustainable community by utilizing carsharing and other energy efficient modes of transportation.
