In partnership with the Georgia Department of Human Services, GCAPP operates a network of five Second Chance Homes. The Second Chance Home model is designed to address the myriad of issues related to teen pregnancy and literally give teen mothers, who are at greatest risk, a second chance at success. The Second Chance Homes Network helps teen mothers become self-sufficient by providing them a safe and stable living environment, educational support to complete high school, parenting skills, and life skills. (see Schedule O for continuation).The ultimate goal is the avoidance of a repeat teen pregnancy and put the young mothers on a firm path of long-term economic independence. Because of its wrap-around services, Second Chance Homes' rate of repeat teen pregnancies is only 7%, significantly lower than the state's rate of 19%. Since 2001 GCAPP has helped nearly 2,000 young mothers and their children. 551993 21050 Through GCAPP's WISE initiative (Working to Institutionalize Sex Education) GCAPP is the leading organization in building the state's infrastructure to institutionalize medically accurate, age appropriate sexual health education in Georgia's schools. WISE is currently working in Chatham, Clarke, Hall, Fulton, Floyd, Dougherty, Grady, Gwinnett and DeKalb counties. WISE is also district wide in the Atlanta Public School System. In 2018 GCAPP reached nearly 57,000 students with comprehensive sex ed empowering them with critical information. In 2018 GCAPP also trained nearly 400 teachers in comprehensive sex ed. WISE/Comprehensive Sex Ed programs are currently implemented in 180 schools. 375549 GCAPP's Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) educates high risk students on abstinence, contraception and STDs. GCAPP serves as the PREP program's training and technical assistance provider. Through PREP, GCAPP trains staff at approximately 25 youth serving organizations in high risk communities throughout Georgia. Nearly 58% of youth report decreased intent to engage in sex in within 6 months in comparison to 18% at the beginning of the program; 85% report they know how to protect themselves from STDs and pregnancy. Through our PREP partnerships and after school programs we trained 80+ youth-serving organizations in 2018. 502203 Power MovesGCAPP addresses childhood obesity and physical inactivity through its PowerMoves! program. PowerMoves! improves the nutrition and physical activity of elementary school students, K through 5Th grade, to help lay a solid foundation for a healthy adolescence. GCAPP builds gardens at schools in food deserts to give kids the full food-to-table process and hands-on horticulture. As a learning companion, GCAPP also implements the Plant, Grow, & Learn curriculum which integrates health, nutrition and science.
