HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2017-2018 FISCAL YEARRainey HouseThe University in 2016 purchased the historic Ramer-Stringer-Rainey House, located adjacent to its main campus at 402 Boulevard in Anderson, South Carolina, renovating the property to serve as home of the Office of Development and Alumni Engagement. The new office became operational in 2017.The property, built in 1930 in a Tudor Revivalist style, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The house, with a sprawling plan of approximately six thousand square feet, has a poured concrete foundation and is of brick and stone masonry construction. There are three visible components of the house: the main entry block with a projecting two-story gable, the one-and-one-half story east wing, and the one-and-one-half story west wing that angles toward the rear of the property. The unusual, asymmetrical shape and the presence of dormers on the wings are cause for a very complex roof with a combination of gable, hip, and jerkinhead forms. Clay tiles, manufactured to simulate wood shingles, protect the roof. The wood and metal casement windows, all with lead panes, vary between paired and tripartite and have transoms over each.Grant support for the Anderson communityThe University recently secured a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to aid further development of the Rocky River Nature Park, where students and faculty conduct biological research. Additionally, the College of Education secured a $600,000 multi-year grant to help K-12 schools integrate mobile learning in their classrooms, continuing the University's legacy of innovation in education.As one of the fastest growing private universities in the southeast, and the second largest private institution in South Carolina, the University has received several recognitions of its stature in the academic community. In 2017, the University was named an Apple Distinguished School for the second year in a row, one of just a few universities in the world to receive the designation twice.
