<Desc>Scholars Program - The FLOC Scholars Program serves students in grades 6-12, and postsecondary students, helping them gain the skills needed to graduate from high school, pursue higher education, and succeed in college and career. The Scholars Program served a total of 110 middle and high school students in the 2017-2018 academic year. Our Postsecondary program is composed of 36 students, 67 percent of which are females and 33 percent males; 90 percent of our students are currently enrolled full-time (taking at least 12 credits); 5% are enrolled part-time (less than 12 credits) and 5 percent are not currently enrolled in a postsecondary institution due to financial hardship but have plans to re-enroll in the next academic year. In grade-based cohorts of 20, FLOC students receive academic and career guidance tailored to their grade level. Once a week for 2-hours, FLOC staff delivers workshops that cover a variety of topics and provide students with tools and techniques to aim successfully for college and vocational schools. During workshops, students have an opportunity to explore topics, such as leadership, self-identity, group identity, international cultures, high school preparation, all while exploring D.C.'s social, economic, and political climates. FLOC's network of partners continued to provide opportunities for youth to develop new relationships and explore the world around them. During the summer, Scholars have the opportunity to attend weekly camps at our Outdoor Educational Center in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Exposure to the outdoors, learning survival skills, and disconnecting from all electronic devices, allows students to take risks and engage in activities that push them outside of their comfort zones. Middle, high school, and postsecondary programs are designed to ensure that students graduate from high school academically and emotionally prepared to attend and complete a postsecondary education. Throughout the program, scholars and their families are assisted throughout the rigorous college application and financial aid process. As students ramp up this process in their junior and senior years, they are guided through the nuts and bolts of choosing, applying to, and financing a higher education through: Visits to college and university campuses, college research, SAT preparation, college essay writing, and financial aid workshops. As students enter a postsecondary institution, the Scholars program continues to provide support and mentoring through regular check in's, distance learning seminars and professional development workshops during semester breaks. In order to quantify and assess non-cognitive growth and college readiness in our students, we administer an assessment survey in the fall and spring. FLOC's surveys are individualized for each grade cohort based on the outcomes and objectives listed in the CollegeEd College Planning Program Curriculum from College Board.</Desc>

<Desc>Neighborhood Tutoring Program - FLOC's Neighborhood Tutoring Program serves our District of Columbia youth grades 1-12 by intervening where they need it most in Language and Math. NTP staff, with the help of our committed volunteers, provides one-on-one tutoring to students in one or both subject areas assisting them in reaching grade level competency. The individualized lessons and attention provided by our team are paramount in supporting students in increasing their mastery, fluency and overall confidence in math, language and reading comprehension. NTP has served more than 270 youth with the dedication of close to 300 volunteers during the 2017-18 school year. With 100% of our students testing at a minimum of 6 months behind grade level, and an average of 2 years behind grade level; our program helps students improve an average of one grade level each semester of 28 or more hours of consistent tutoring.</Desc>

<Desc>Outdoor Education Center - Through FLOC's programming at the Outdoor Education Center (OEC) located in Harpers Ferry, WV, FLOC teaches individual and group leadership skills, team building and environmental education. The OEC provides year-round, custom-designed, client-focused programming consisting of one-day to multi-day learning experiences. FLOC house multiple hands-on environmental and science learning centers as well as adventure challenges, trainings, retreat and facility rental. The OEC is located on an extraordinary 350-acre wilderness site, 65 miles from our nation's capital.During the 2017-18 School year, the Outdoor Education Center (OEC) served a total of 40 students, 15 at Charles Town Middle School and 25 at Harpers Ferry Middle School. The focus of the program is civic engagement, healthy lifestyle choices, environmental advocacy, team building and leadership development. The after school program offers experiential opportunities and lessons that students would not otherwise learn about in their typical school curricula.Program Accomplishments:- Students improved their knowledge of geography and global cultures and traditions by 18% over the course of the program year, with students averaging 80% mastery of content at the close of the program.- Students improved their knowledge of the environment and gardening by 35% over the course of the program year, with students averaging 84% mastery of content at the close of the program. In addition, FLOC's middle and high school students had the opportunity to attend camp for free again this summer. This year we continued our high school leadership camp. This three-day camp encompassed various workshops and activities to develop non-cognitive skills such as critical thinking, perseverance, adaptability, and intellectual curiosity. Our focus during the high school camp was community service and leadership development. The OEC had four consecutive weeks of different themed camps for FLOC's middle school students, Scholars DC and Leaders in Action WV. The first week's "Wilderness Voyagers" camp focused on foraging for food, survival skills, shelter building, water ecology and learning about team work on the high and low ropes challenge course. The third week's "Arts on the Mountain Camp" took an artistic approach to the natural setting, learning about music, clay sculptures, forest crafts using natural resources to create drawings, theatre and nature poetry. In between "arts on the Mountain," there were two "off-site" trips called the "Ridge to River Camps," during week two and week four. These trips allowed students to pack their belongings and paddle on the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers, hike along the Appalachian Trail and camp in the wilderness at our OEC site and additional public camping sites. While these camps have different topics and themes, they all develop the non-cognitive skills critical to postsecondary success. Throughout the summer, the OEC serves 90 FLOC students.</Desc>
