The Volcker Alliance is conducting a number of initiatives focused on building a highly capable corps of public servants and, simultaneously, relevant research. G2U aims to catalyze a robust local marketplace that can sustainably connect government's hiring and research needs with local university capacity. Financial Regulation Initiatives. Much of the Alliance's efforts in the Financial Regulation area have involved the recent proposed revisions to the Volcker Rule. Over the last few months the Alliance staff has worked diligently to analyze the 400-page proposal to revise the Volcker Rule. We have expended considerable effort to provide support for our arguments against easing the core elements of the Rule. Truth and Integrity in Government Finance. In September 2018, in partnership with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, and the Pew Charitable Trusts, the Alliance co-sponsored a one-day conference, "Preventing the Next State Budget Crisis: Improving Budget Transparency to Bolster Fiscal Sustainability." The event attracted more than one hundred attendees and several hundred online viewers. Attendees participated in a series of actionable discussions on ways state governments may be able to avert future budgetary crises. Our research has been having impact in state legislatures across the country. For example, our research has spurred the unanimous passage of legislation early in the year in Utah to mandate long-term revenue forecasting-one of our recommended best practices-and more recently in June, Vermont included stepped-up contributions for pensions and the rainy day fund in response to our conclusion that the state's revenue volatility posed risks meriting the deposit of additional cash reserves. Additionally, in June, the Alliance posted our new State Budget Laboratory, featuring extensive data visualizations and downloadable sets of budget data compiled by our eight-university research network.
