Purchase of collection items are recorded in the year in which the items are acquired as decreases in unrestricted, temporarily or permanently restricted net assets depending on whether or not the assets used to purchase the items were restricted by the donors. Contributed collection items are not reflected in the financial statements. Proceeds from deaccession or insurance recoveries are reflected as increases in the appropriated net asset classes. The Museum's collections are made up of artifacts of historical significance, scientific specimens, and art objects that are held for educational, scientific, and curatorial purposes.
