The North Carolina Center for Nonprofits strives to educate, connect, and advocate for North Carolina nonprofits. false false 346749 0 204834 Seminars and Workshops The North Carolina Center for Nonprofits trained 2,800 community leaders this year through 53 presentations, webinars, and workshops across the state about best practices in nonprofit governance, leadership, and management. These trainings provided opportunities for nonprofit board and staff members to strengthen community assets, exchange solutions to problems, share the lessons they have learned, and offer support to each other in their challenging work. Topics included fundraising in rural America, social media 101, crowdfunding, creating a winning organizational culture, grant writing, and much more. The Center also launched the pilot phase of "Walking the Talk: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in North Carolina Nonprofits," a multi-year initiative to support the capacity of nonprofits to address issues of race equity and inclusion both in their programs and within their own organizations. Nonprofits held viewing parties and community discussions after the first four webinars in the series. Webinar topics addressed the distinctions between equity, diversity, and inclusion; implicit bias; supporting LGBTQIA in nonprofits; and addressing the racial leadership gap among nonprofit board and staff leaders. During other training activities, we: - Collaborated with the N.C. Association of CPAs to offer the 2017 Not-for-Profit Accounting Conference with 403 people in attendance. - Educated 440 nonprofit leaders about emerging issues and best practices at our 2017 Statewide Conference, Embracing Uncertainty. This three-day event featured a keynote presentation, "Building Thriving Nonprofits," by Joan Garry as well as dozens of workshops tackling all aspects of nonprofit management and operations, and deep-dive intensives on building racial justice within our organizations, expanding fundraising in challenging times, and laws that govern nonprofits. Peer-sharing time, career coaching, and networking opportunities rounded out the agenda. - Provided training and information on advocacy and working with legislators to 428 nonprofit staff, board, and volunteers through our 2018 Nonprofit Town Hall series. Our Town Halls helped nonprofits better understand how new legislation could affect their daily work, educated legislators on the ways that various proposals could affect their constituents and districts, and connected local nonprofits with their legislators. 349942 0 40901 Outreach, Education of the Public, and Collaboration In November 2017, the Center revised its mission, vision, and strategic directions to more directly align with educating, connecting, and advocating for North Carolina nonprofits. Almost simultaneously, we launched Walking the Talk: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in North Carolinas Nonprofits. The multi-year initiative has helped nonprofits improve their understanding of and capacity to address the sectors racial leadership gap, the sectors generational leadership gap, and the policies, practices, and organizational cultures in nonprofits that exacerbate these gaps through: - Three interactive workshops and four webinars - A webinar viewing and community discussion gathering - A subsection of our online resources dedicated to EDI information, articles, and tools - The creation and regular convening of a cadre of NC equity consultants and regional partners. We conducted a statewide survey of nonprofit salary and benefit data, resulting in the new 2018 Compensation Report for NC Nonprofits that provides benchmarks for positions in nonprofits of all types and sizes across North Carolina. We worked with local web design and development firm, DesignHammer, to create a new streamlined and appealing website for resources on effective nonprofit practices, training opportunities, job listings, and services for our Members. Throughout the year, we welcomed 198,276 unique visitors. We also engaged 9,431 people through social media. We collaborated with hundreds of nonprofit, business, and government entities to host and present educational webinars, workshops, and discussions, many of which included community and business leaders, lawmakers, and media representatives. We advocated for a positive policy environment to support nonprofits work. We worked closely with the Centers grassroots network of 4,119 nonprofit board and staff leaders serving all 100 counties that have asked to participate in this advocacy network. To multiply our impact, we collaborated with statewide, local, and national organizations that serve nonprofits. Some examples of specific results include: - Kept the nonprofit sector united on contentious federal, state, and local tax policy issues affecting the tax-exempt status of 501(c)(3) nonprofits. - Successfully advocated on state and federal legislation and rules to help nonprofits save time and money. Examples include expanding state laws on nonprofit fundraising events and preserving the provision in Section 501(c)(3) of the IRC protecting charitable nonprofits from partisan politics. - Tracked dozens of bills in the NC General Assembly and Congress that could affect nonprofits in a wide variety of ways. - Kept nonprofit staff and board members across the state informed through weekly email updates, social media postings, and regional workshops. - Provided training and written materials to help North Carolina nonprofits understand the implications of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act for their organizations. - Connected nonprofits with elected officials in their communities at a series of eight nonprofit town halls held around the state. 220746 0 469576 Member Services to Nonprofits The North Carolina Center for Nonprofits offered an array of services to increase nonprofits knowledge and their capacity to make a positive difference for their communities and causes. For example, we helped nonprofits exchange solutions and work together for a better North Carolina by supporting a network of 6,680 board and staff leaders and other volunteers in over 1,400 nonprofits of all sizes and types that serve all 100 counties. This year, we have implemented an online community for member engagement, Center Connect. This software will allow for the Center to encourage interactions among Members via messaging, photo and resource sharing, blogs and forums. It will go live to all Members in the beginning of 2019. The Center is also updating and revising our programs, services and Member benefits to ensure greater alignment with our new organizational strategic directions. We will be launching a revamped annual Member Survey at the end of 2018. The best measure of the value of the Centers services to North Carolinas nonprofits is whether they renew their memberships. We educated nonprofits about effective organizational practices in nonprofit management, governance, and leadership. Examples of topics include financial management, legal compliance, accountability, fundraising, evaluation, advocacy, technology, succession planning and executive transitions, communications, collaboration and equity, diversity and inclusion. In addition, we have carefully selected nearly 700 resources on good nonprofits practices in our online library, Information Central. Nonprofits tapped this online library by downloading sample organizational policies and substantive articles on specific challenges that they were facing with an average of 215 downloads per day. The Center produced timely in-depth resources, including Countdown to the Inevitable: North Carolina Nonprofit CEOs in Transition, our report focusing on nonprofit CEOs plans for their executive transitions and how nonprofit staff and boards can and should prepare. We issued quarterly Common Ground and bi-weekly Connect & Learn e-newsletters full of nonprofit best practices, news, and trends. We disseminated and updated the Centers signature guide, Principles & Practices for Nonprofit Excellence: A Self-Help Tool for Organizational Effectiveness, which outlines specific benchmarks to help nonprofits identify areas for improvement in their governance. The Center publishes these resources to help ensure the integrity of the nonprofit sector and promote stewardship by individual nonprofits and the nonprofit sector as a whole. Through partnerships with the N.C. Bar Association, N.C. Association of CPAs, Raleigh-Wake Human Resources Management Association, American Marketing Association, and the International Coach Federation, the Center has developed a volunteer network of 252 experienced attorneys, certified public accountants, and professionals in human resources, marketing, succession planning, and coaching. We arranged 232 pro bono consultations for nonprofits with these volunteers in specialty areas that are critical to nonprofits success. We also offered free on-site consultations with experts at the 2017 Conference for NCs Nonprofits. Description: Nonprofit Sector Resource Conservation Expenses: $0 including grants of $0 Revenue: $23,392 The North Carolina Center for Nonprofits offered 12 programs to help nonprofits conserve resources so they can maximize the value of their programs to their communities. Examples include options for reducing the costs of unemployment insurance, health insurance, retirement and other employee benefit programs, as well as discounts on other operating expenses such as email marketing, information technology services, charitable solicitation registration requirements, and top journals. We also disseminated tips on saving time and money. PROCESS TO REVIEW FORM 990 - FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 11B Form 990 is sent in draft form to members of the Board of Directors for review and changes. Any substantive changes are sent back to the full Board for review. The final Form 990 is sent to the IRS. COMPENSATION POLICY - FORM 990, PART VI, SECTION B, LINE 15B Salary ranges for all positions are developed based on studies of comparable positions. The Executive Committee of the organization's Board of Directors reviews and decides on these salary ranges. The full Board of Directors determines the salary of the President. The Board delegates the setting of salaries for all other staff, including staff who serve as officers, to the President within the limitations of the total organizational budget.
