Five years ago, KnowledgeWorks entered the national conversation about personalized, competency-based learning (PCBL) behind a concentration of thoughtful policy briefs focused on federal policy reform, aligned advocacy, and partner engagement. This body of work, combined with over 15 years of on-the-ground experience in innovative school design, implementation, continuous improvement and collective impact, quickly established KnowledgeWorks as a thought leader and trusted resource for policymakers and other organizations launching statewide and local PCBL initiatives. These leaders are now turning to KnowledgeWorks for support bringing to life the PCBL communities that their policies have enabled. As a result, in FY2018 KnowledgeWorks continued to move from policy to practice in the PCBL space. The Organization continued to implement its professional development and technical assistance approach in approximately 25 districts across the country. In addition, KnowledgeWorks began a partnership with the North Dakota Department of Public instruction to implement and scale PCBL in the state, consistent with NDDPI Choice Ready vision. By the close of FY2018, the KW in Schools team was working on implementation projects in Colorado, Michigan, Ohio, South Carolina, Minnesota, Maine, and Connecticut suggesting strong demand for personalized learning and PCBL services in FY2019 and beyond. 1980115 397040 34778 Strive Partnership:During FY2018, StrivePartnership continued to deliver work as a designated Talent Hub supported by a 3-year grant from the Lumina Foundation that is focused on helping 1,400 local single mothers pursue a post-secondary credential. StrivePartnership also managed a total of 16 cradle to career projects. From those projects, a game called the Dream Game was created to help identify and mobilize undervalued assets in urban core neighborhoods associated with our community deep dive project. StrivePartnership also completed the first two phases of an Ecosystem Inventory Project. Other accomplishments during FY2018 include: the distribution of over 160,000 books to children ages 0-5 through the Imagination Library Project; graduating its 3rd cohort from IMPACTU - an improvement science course for local systems leaders; and the development and maintenance of data dashboards for both Cincinnati and Covington Public School Districts. Through a series of meetings with school, business and community partners, StrivePartnership announced its focus in the upcoming year on improving middle grade math performance in the region and to debut its We Strive commitment to education equity that seeks deeper level of collective impact and a more comprehensive approach that works harder and goes further giving every child every chance for a better education. 1455828 77808 Policy & Advocacy:In FY2018, KnowledgeWorks continued to leverage the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) to help states advance their work in personalized learning. The Policy and Advocacy team reviewed ESSA plans for all 50 states and D.C., publishing a map that highlights all personalized learning-related policies in each plan. The team completed the ESSA series with publication of three final resources: an infographic highlighting personalized learning work in state ESSA plans, a paper discussing trends across state ESSA plans and a pdf with the personalized learning content of all state ESSA plans. The policy and advocacy team also helped a number of states advance personalized learning policies ranging from district pilot programs to competency-based graduation requirements in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee and Washington-D.C. These included KnowledgeWorks input both at the legislative and regulatory levels as well as guidance for state education agencies in these states.
