<MissionDesc>The American Fibromyalgia Syndrome Association's (AFSA's) two missions are: (1) fund superior quality studies on fibromyalgia and (2) educate patients about this disease so that they can seek improved healthcare and achieve a better quality of life.</MissionDesc>

<Desc>With research grants from AFSA (typically $85,000 each), scientists advance the understanding of fibromyalgia. Our focus is on causes, treatments, and developing biomarkers for the disease. In the current year, AFSA funded 2 projects and approved the funding for a third project that is pending IRB approval. Project 1: Nicholas Fallon, Ph.D., and Andreas Goebel, M.D., Ph.D., at the University of Liverpool (U.K.) are investigating the processes involved in causing fibromyalgia symptoms to flare, with emphasis on the brain and immunological functions. Award amount is $78,058 (U.S. funds).Project 2: Shafaqq Sikandar, Ph.D., at Queen Mary University of London (U.K.) is examining how neutrophils are different in fibromyalgia and will determine if these cells can be used as a biomarker for the disease. Award amount is $74,649 (U.S. funds).Project 3: Katherine Martucci, Ph.D., at Duke University (U.S.) is conducting a treatment trial using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to treat the pain, fatigue and cognitive symptoms of fibromyalgia with an accelerated protocol targeting the medial prefrontal cortex. Project was approved in June of 2025 for $90,000 and funding is expected in October 2025.</Desc>

<Desc>As part of our patient-education mission, we maintain a website to serve as a go-to resource for patients and their healthcare providers. The site includes sections on both drug and nondrug treatments, lifestyle changes, coping strategies, advances in treatments and research, and descriptions of projects funded by AFSA. We added 20 new pages to the site (it grew from 83 to 103 pages) and the number of new people visiting the site for information was 65,000 during the fiscal year.</Desc>

<ExplanationTxt>All grant recipients (both principal investigator and institutional grants officer) must sign a "Conditions of Award" which describes mandatory quarterly reporting of progress on projects funded (including financial accounting), beginning at 6 months. The project duration must be specified and if there are any project delays or unexpected problems, AFSA must be notified immediately. In addition, the investigator is expected to submit the data from the study to a peer-reviewed medical journal for publication within 3 months of completing the study. The published study must indicate that AFSA was the source of funding for the project and a copy of the accepted manuscript must be sent to AFSA. Regular communication via email and telephone between AFSA and the principal investigator occurs throughout the study as warranted. Also, a full financial accounting of the study is sent to AFSA upon project completion and any unused funds must be returned. Principal investigators are encouraged to use the data obtained from their AFSA study to apply to larger granting institutions so that they may continue their investigations in the field of fibromyalgia</ExplanationTxt>

<ExplanationTxt>The Conflict of Interest (COI) document covers any director, officer, or member of a committee with governing board delegated powers, who has a direct or indirect financial interest in another entity doing business with AFSA. A COI can occur when an officer, director, or trustee's obligation to further AFSA's charitable purpose is at odds with their own financial interests. The interested person has a duty to disclose the potential conflict, which will be discussed at an AFSA board meeting. The COI shall be reviewed and voted on at a board meeting, with the interested party abstaining from the vote. The minutes of the governing board meeting will include the conflict and its resolution. Board members are required to review and sign the COI document each year.</ExplanationTxt>
