The following is a summary of key accomplishments during this fiscal year.Registration and Enrollment:We converted to a new registration system during the Summer of 2017. This has allowed us to have increased efficiency in our registration process and better reporting capabilities. Linking our registration system to our website has enabled our clients to register online. Staffing and Human Resources:Lynne Toye joined HSA in the position of Chief Administrative Officer in January 2018. This position was added to our team in order to provide greater oversight for our earned income through registration. The role is also responsible for insurance, benefits, HR, and Marketing. The registration and bursar functions were re-branded as Student Services in order to better service our families. In addition, Natalie Pitts, a CPA, was hired in the position of Accounts Receivable Manager in June of 2018. Her responsibilities include handling accounts receivable for the Administration/HR function as well as handling contracts and billing for Student Services and Education Outreach. This position was expanded beyond the scope of the former bursar in order to provide better separation of duties and more sophisticated financial reporting capabilities.We experienced significant turnover in our Development Department in May of 2018. The departure of our VP of Development, our Manager of Individual Giving, and our Manager of Institutional Giving left us with three open positions. We added a PT Manager of Institutional Giving and a Development Associate to provide support. We also entered into an agreement with Koszyn & Company to provide third party support for Institutional and Individual Giving. On May 1, 2018 we entered into an Agreement with Howe-Lewis in order to conduct a search for a new Chief Development Officer to lead our Development Department. The search is ongoing, with an expected time frame of 5-6 months for completion. Development:Our Development team was focused on fundraising from government, foundations, and individuals, the three sources of our contributed income. It hosted our annual gala at the Plaza Hotel in October of 2017, which raised over $1MM. In addition, a Spring gala was held at HSA in May of 2018. The Spring gala was focused on cultivating our Associate Board as well as our HSA parent community. Information Technology:Herriberto Torrado was hired into the position of Director of Information Technology in July of 2017. He is conducting a review of our systems and introducing efficiencies in how we store and process information. He is responsible for our data security and data storage procedures as well. In addition, he provides technical equipment maintenance and technical support on a day to day basis. Capital Improvements:Several projects were completed in the main HSA Location at 645 Saint Nicholas Avenue.Projects Completed: June 2018Installation of an elevator: Provided ADA compliancy and support to HSA's 2nd floor, where a majority of the practice rooms and administrative offices are located, which was formerly only accessible via stairs.Installing an ADA restroom on the second floor: in making the 2nd floor ADA accessible, HSA needed to provide a restroom that was ADA compliant to serve all ADA students and visitors.Wheelchair accessible ramp in the school's entrance: installing a ramp meeting ADA size requirements and a railing that allows wheelchair-bound individuals to enter the building unassisted.Installation of a new boiler: HSA used its HVAC system to heat the building with natural gas which elevated costs. New systems have resulted in natural gas cost reduction and energy savings.Replacement of 4 rooftop air conditioning units and upgrades to air distribution systems: AC Units were over 30 years old and past the manufacturer's recommended useful life and were not energy efficient.Programs:HSA operates 5 main programs: Children's Enrichment, HSA Prep and Pre-Prep, ARTScape, Education Outreach, and Family Public Programs. We also offer programming at events and venues at off-site locations in the community.Of the nearly 2,000 students who participate in our programs, more than 85% are African American or Latino, and nearly 50% of students taking classes at our facility receive financial aid, or take advantage of the flexibility of extended payment plans. By welcoming all children regardless of experience and awarding financial support to those in need, HSA creates a unique learning environment in which children and families of diverse racial, social, and economic backgrounds can come together to study and appreciate the arts, while enhancing their lives through these experiences.The HSA Prep (ages 10 14) and HSA Prep (ages 11 18) programs are transformative programs for young adults pursuing careers in the arts. In FY18 70 students were served in these programs. Students are selected each May through a competitive merit-based application process. The programs are free of charge, with the focus on underserved youth who would not otherwise be able to pursue advanced arts training.Educational Outreach Program brings HSAs high quality arts education programming into classrooms throughout New York City. The Program offsets public schools cuts to the arts and supplements arts education in the schools with in-and after-school instruction. Highly-skilled teaching artist design programs tailored to the schools needs in all four disciplines, with program activities reflecting the goals of the NY State Learning Standards for the Arts and the NYC Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts. Today, HSA stands apart among New York Citys premier arts institutions as the sole provider of quality arts education in four disciplines: music, dance, theater and visual arts. HSA is committed to leveling the playing field by empowering young people from across the multi-cultural and socio-economic spectrum. Children's Enrichment offers high-quality, sequential arts training in music, dance, theatre, and visual arts, welcoming ages 2-18 with no audition or experience required. Given HSAs unique multi-disciplinary focus, students often enroll in more than one class or a combination of group and private classes.Family Programs offer community members and visitors opportunities to enrich their lives through the arts through 20-30 free and low cost theater, music and dance performances; open workshops and rehearsals; professional and student visual art exhibits; ARTMakers talks and panel discussions; and more. FY18 highlights include a performance by theater students in the production Renaissance in the Belly of A Killer Whale and The Art of Steve Prince Opening Reception & Artist Talk on November 17. ARTMakers conversations included singer, actor, and dancer, Alton Fitzgerald White and Broadway star, Brenda Braxton. The year ended with recital presentations and performances from the Music and Dance departments.
