The Center has adopted the policy of not capitalizing collections, therefore, the acquisition of these collectible assets are not recognized within the financial statements of the Center. Since the Center elects not to report the contributed art on their financial statements they are not required to state the fair market value of the collections.The items in the collection consist of an original Howdy Doody marionette and an original Madam marionette used in the production of the Howdy Doody Show which aired on American Television from 1947 to 1960. The Howdy Doody show is considered by many cultural historians as the predecessor to such modern education programs like Sesame Street and The Muppets. The marionettes were donated by the estate of Velma Wayne Dawson, creator of the characters. The marionettes are relevant to the Theatre's exempt status with respect to preservation and history of arts education. Part III, Line 4: Description of organization's collections and how it furthers its purpose. Artwork is on public exhibition in the theatre to enhance the enjoyment of the audiences attending the performances. Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund. A number of donors have directed their current and future donations to establish a permanent endowment to provide income for the McCallum Theatre's operation and programming. The Board of Trustees established a long-term investment policy statement for the Foundation. The Board of Trustees also established a formula to calculate the distribution from the Foundation to the operating fund that factor allocations to the base principal, available assets and adjustments for annual valuation of the consumer price index at December 31 of each year. Part X : FIN48 Footnote The Friends of the Cultural Center, Inc. and McCallum Theatre Foundation, Inc. are not-for-profit organizations that are exempt from federal income taxes under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3), and from California franchise taxes under related state tax regulations and classified by the Internal Revenue Service as other than private foundations. At times the Theatre may be engaged in activities for which it is responsible for payment of unrelated business income tax. Income taxes did not have a material impact on the financial position or change in net assets of the Theatre as of and for the year ended July 31, 2018. The Theatre's policy is to record a liability for any tax position taken that is beneficial to the Theatre, including any interest and penalties, when it is more likely than not the position taken will be overturned by a taxing authority upon examination. Management believes there are no such positions as of July 31, 2018, and accordingly, no liability has been accrued. Generally, the IRS may examine a tax return for three years from the date it is filed. At July 31, 2017, tax years ended July 31, 2017, 2016, and 2015 remained open for possible examination by the IRS. The Theatre's Forms 199, California Exempt Organization Annual Information Return, are subject to examination by the Franchise Tax Board, generally for four years after they are filed.
