LifeFlight of Maine provides care to critically ill and injured patients without regard to whether the patient has insurance or the ability to pay for care. In FY18 LifeFlight incurred $2,302,966 in costs in caring for patients requiring charity care comprised of $1,745,124 in bad debt and $557,842 in charity care. In addition LifeFlight significantly discounted charges to Medicare and MaineCare. Contractual allowances with third party payors reduced revenues by $10,104,782. 568830 LifeFlight of Maine, working collaboratively with the LifeFlight Foundation, supports a wide variety of community initiatives including:Aviation Infrastructure:* Support of runway extension project at the Stephen Bean Airport in Rangeley. * Providing technical services to Maine Medical Center in Portland for the construction of new helipads.* Supporting the operation, maintenance, and certification of 18 automated weather observation systems for the FAA located at airports, islands, and hospitals.* Supporting fuel truck projects at the airports in Frenchville and Presque Isle. * Working with the FAA to support a low level flight system including 30 point in space instrument flight approach and departure procedures and routes linking hospitals, islands, and rural airports with major airports and trauma centers. * Working with multiple public safety agencies to support a network of over 120 remote designated emergency evacuation landing zones. * Providing an electronic database of over 700 approved landing zones throughout Maine communities linked to the State's 911 centers to improve coordination to emergency operations and response. Community Public Safety Initiatives:* Supporting a cooperative search and rescue coordinating project which includes the Maine Warden Service, Maine State Police, 126th Air National Guard, Baxter State Park, Acadian National Park, the Maine Forest Service, and the US Coast Guard.* Supporting multiple airport disaster planning initiatives.* Supporting Red Cross Blood Drives.* Supporting the Maine Emergency Management Agency Maine Prepares Conference.* Supporting youth scouting and civil air patrol projects.* Supporting the Maine Innovation Conference.* Supporting multiple community events.* Providing 60 Ground Safety Programs for 998 participants from EMS agencies, First Responders, 911 centers in 46 communities across the state. * Providing 14 Ground Safety and Access Programs for over 700 participants from the Maine Professional Loggers Association and multiple woodland companies in 12 communities across the state. Continuing Medical Education:LifeFlight provides a comprehensive high fidelity medical simulation education program across the State. In FY2018 LifeFlight provided education to 275 physicians, nurses, and paramedics at 7 hospitals, one university, and multiple EMS agencies. These programs include advanced resuscitation, pediatric critical care, airway, trauma, and cardiac management.
